69th Venice International Film Festival
The 69th annual Venice International Film Festival, organized by Venice Biennale, took place at Venice Lido from 29 August to 8 September 2012. The festival opened with the Indian director Mira Nair's ''The Reluctant Fundamentalist'', and closed with the Out of Competition film ''The Man Who Laughs'', directed by Jean-Pierre Ameris. Terrence Malick's film ''To the Wonder'' was met with both boos and cheers from critics at its premiere. The Golden Lion for Best Film was won by ''Pietà'', directed by South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki-duk. Paul Thomas Anderson for '' The Master'' won the Silver Lion for Best Director. Additionally, American actors Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman shared the prize for Best Actor for that film. The Reluctant Fundamentalist (film)
''The Reluctant Fundamentalist'' is a 2012 political thriller drama film directed by Mira Nair and starring Riz Ahmed, Kate Hudson, and Liev Schreiber. It is based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Mohsin Hamid. The film is a post-9/11 story about the impact of the terrorist attacks on one Pakistani man and his treatment by Americans in reaction to them. In 2007, Nair read the manuscript of Hamid's unpublished novel. After reading it, she decided to make a film. Her production house, Mirabai Films, and Nair's long-time partner, producer Lydia Dean Pilcher's production company, Cine Mosaic, optioned the film rights to the novel. The film premiered as the opening film for the 69th Venice International Film Festival, and at the 37th Toronto International Film Festival. Peter Ho-sun Chan (born 28 November 1962) is a film director and producer. Early life Chan was born in British Hong Kong to parents China. He and his family moved to Thailand when he was 12, where he grew up amongst the international Chinese community in Bangkok. He speaks Thai as fluently as a Thai person. ''Fill the Void'' ( he, למלא את החלל - lemale et ha'ḥalal) is a 2012 Israeli drama film written and directed by Rama Burshtein. It focuses on life among the Haredi Jewish community in Tel Aviv, Israel. Hadas Yaron stars as Shira Mendelman, an 18-year-old girl who is pressured to marry her older sister's husband, following the death of her sister in childbirth. The film required a lengthy production period, taking over a year for the casting to be completed, and another year and three months for editing. Burshtein, who was doubtful as to how much of the process would be completed, took a step-by-step approach, focusing first on the writing, then on accumulating enough funding for the project, followed by the filming and editing. Burshtein became the first Haredi Jewish woman to direct a film intended for wide distribution.
