61 Division (Sri Lanka)
The 61 Division is a division of the Sri Lanka Army. Established on 5 May 2008, the division is currently based in Boossa in the Southern Province. Security Forces Headquarters – West
Security Forces Headquarters – West (SFHQ-W) is a regional command of the Sri Lanka Army, that is responsible for the operational deployment and command all army units stationed in the western part of the island, this includes two divisions. The current Commander SFHQ-W is Major General U A B Medawela. The SFHQ-W is based at Panagoda Cantonment. Although it is primary a command of the Sri Lanka Army it coordinates operations and deployments of ground units of the Navy, Air Force and police with that of the army in that area. Boossa
Boossa is a small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in the Galle District of the Southern Province. It is approximately south of Colombo and north of Galle, immediately north of the mouth of the Gin Ganga (Gin River). It is situated at an elevation of above the sea level. Boossa was affected by the tsunami caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake with 28 known deaths. Transport Boossa is located on the Coastal or Southern Rail Line (connecting Colombo through to Matara), and the A2 highway, connecting Colombo to Wellawaya. Southern Province, Sri Lanka
The Southern Province ( si, දකුණු පළාත ''Dakuṇu Paḷāta'', ta, தென் மாகாணம் ''Theṉ Mākāṇam'') of Sri Lanka is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. A brigade is a major tactical military formation that typically comprises three to six battalions plus supporting elements. It is roughly equivalent to an enlarged or reinforced regiment. Sri Lanka Engineers
The Corp of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) is a combat support arm of the Sri Lanka Army which provides military engineering. It is made up of ten regular regiments and one volunteer regiment. Headquartered at Panagoda Cantonment, it is headed by the Centre Commandant. The corps provides combat engineering, construction and other technical support to the Sri Lankan Army and civil authorities. The corps' key roles are mobility and counter mobility. That is providing mobility to friendly forces while denying movement to enemy forces. Sri Lanka Army Pioneer Corps
The Sri Lanka Army Pioneer Corps (SLAPC) is a (reserve) regiment of the Sri Lanka Army. Established as manpower reserve to be utilized in times of strikes and union action to maintain the functionality of essential services and other state functions, other such units that existed then and has since been disband include the Post and Telegraph Signals (PTS) and the Ceylon Railway Engineer Corps (CREC). With the escalation of the Sri Lankan Civil War the regiment has taken up combat duties. History The Ceylon Army Pioneer Corps was raised on 5 July 1959 with a large strength of 14,000 men. The unit is part of the Volunteer Force and was based on the Ceylon Pioneers. Lt Col M.W.F. Abayakoon of the Cadet Corps was appointed its commanding officer.
