60th United States Colored Infantry Regiment
The 60th United States Colored Infantry was a U.S.C.T. infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was composed of African American enlisted men commanded by white officers and was authorized by the Bureau of Colored Troops which was created by the United States War Department on May 22, 1863. Service The 60th U.S. Colored Infantry was organized from the 1st Iowa Infantry (colored) in March 1864 and served in various garrison duties in the Department of Arkansas assigned to the VII Corps (Union Army) for its entire service. On July 26, 1864, near Wallace's Ferry in Arkansas, elements of the 60th and 56th Colored Infantry regiments and Battery E of the 2nd U.S. Colored Artillery were attacked by a superior force of Confederate cavalry commanded by Col. VII Corps (Union Army)
Two corps of the Union Army were called VII Corps during the American Civil War. VII Corps (Department of Virginia) This corps was established 22 July 1862 from various Union troops stationed in southeastern Virginia. The corps' main combat action occurred in the spring of 1863, when it faced Confederate troops of James Longstreet's Corps in Suffolk, Virginia. Colonel (United States)
The colonel () in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force, is the most senior field-grade military officer rank, immediately above the rank of lieutenant colonel and just below the rank of brigadier general. Colonel is equivalent to the naval rank of captain in the other uniformed services. By law, an officer previously required at least 22 years of cumulative service and a minimum of three years as a lieutenant colonel before being promoted to colonel. With the signing of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019 (NDAA 2019), military services now have the authorization to directly commission new officers up to the rank of colonel. The 15th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Cavalry was a volunteer cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. History of service The 15th Illinois Cavalry was organized at Aurora, Kane Co., Illinois on 2 Aug 1861 by Captain Albert Jenkins and was mustered on 23 September 1861 as Cavalry, attached to the Thirty-Sixth Illinois Volunteers. On 24 September 1861, moved from camp, and reported to the Regiment, at Rolla, Missouri.
