6th Parliament Of Upper Canada
The 6th Parliament of Upper Canada was opened 27 July 1812. Elections in Upper Canada had been held in June 1812. All sessions were held at York, Upper Canada. The first Parliament buildings (located at the intersection of Front and Parliament Streets) were destroyed by fire on 27 April 1813, as a consequence of an American attack on the city during the War of 1812. The House of Assembly then met once in 1814 in the ballroom of Jordan's York Hotel. The House then moved to the home of Chief Justice of Upper Canada William Henry Draper. This parliament was dissolved 18 April 1816. Opening Of Parliament
The State Opening of Parliament is a ceremonial event which formally marks the beginning of a session of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It includes a speech from the throne known as the King's (or Queen's) Speech. The event takes place in the House of Lords chamber on the first day of a new session, which is usually in May or June, and traditionally in November, but can occur at any time of year depending on the timing of General Elections and parliamentary session start dates. It takes place in front of both Houses of Parliament. The monarch, wearing the Imperial State Crown, reads a speech that has been prepared by his or her government outlining its plans for that parliamentary year. Frontenac County, Ontario
Frontenac County is a county and census division of the Canadian province of Ontario. It is located in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario. The city of Kingston is in the Frontenac census division, but is separated from the County of Frontenac. John McGregor (Upper Canada)
John McGregor (ca. 1751 – February 12, 1828) was a businessman and political figure in Upper Canada. McGregor was born in Scotland around 1751 and came to Detroit in 1784. When the British withdrew from that area, he moved to Old Sandwich Town, now part of Windsor, Ontario, in 1796. He received a city lot in Sandwich at #4 Russell Street where he lived for the remainder of his life. He became a merchant there in partnership with his cousin, James McGregor (Merchant) and had a boat built to transport grain. He later took over a gristmill from Thomas Clark in 1810 when Clark defaulted on a loan. In 1800, he was appointed justice of the peace in the Western District. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada for Kent in 1804 and re-elected twice more, in 1808 and 1812. Kent County, Ontario
Kent County, area 2,458 km2 (949 sq mi) is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was created in 1792 and named by John Graves Simcoe in honour of the English County. The county is in an alluvial plain between Lake St. Clair, and Lake Erie, watered by two navigable streams, the Thames River and the Sydenham River. James Young (Upper Canada Politician)
James Young (1777 – July 1, 1831) was a farmer and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Nova Scotia in 1777 and settled in Ameliasburgh Township in Upper Canada. In 1808, he was named justice of the peace in the Midland District. He served in the local militia during the War of 1812 and became lieutenant colonel in 1824. Ameliasburgh Township, Ontario
Ameliasburgh is an historic township in southern Ontario, Canada, one of the three original townships that formed Prince Edward County. The other two townships were Marysburgh and Sophiasburgh. Originally known as Seventh Town, it was renamed in 1787 after Princess Amelia, the youngest child of George III. The township was amalgamated into the Corporation of the County of Prince Edward, a single tier municipality, on January 1, 1998. The community of Ameliasburg, Ontario was named after the township. Gideon Adams
Gideon Adams (February 11, 1755 – June 20, 1834) was a farmer, soldier, and politician in Upper Canada, British North America, British Empire, now Ontario, Canada. Gideon Adams was born in Connecticut, in 1755 and moved with his family, in 1764, to Arlington, Vermont, Arlington, in the New Hampshire Grants. He served, during the American Revolution, as an Ensign (rank), ensign, in Dr. Samuel Adams of Arlington, his father's British Loyalist, military company, Adams' Rangers, and later, as a Lieutenant, with Edward Jessup, Jessup's Loyal Rangers. Grenville County, Ontario
Grenville County is a former county in the Canadian province of Ontario. It fronted on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River, between the towns of Kingston and Cornwall. The county was created in 1792, and named in honour of William Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville, who was the British Secretary of State responsible for the colonies in 1790. It consisted of five townships, which were settled primarily by United Empire Loyalists in the late 1700s after the Revolutionary War. Prior to being settled by Europeans, the area was home to many generations of native cultures. Grenville County merged with Leeds County in 1850 to create Leeds and Grenville County. Alexander Macdonell (Ontario MPP)
Alexander Macdonell of Collachie (1762 – March 18, 1842) was a soldier and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Scotland in 1762 and arrived in the Mohawk Valley of New York (state), New York with other members of his family, including his brother, Angus Macdonell, Angus Macdonell of Collachie. He served with the 84th Regiment of Foot (Royal Highland Emigrants), Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment during the American Revolution. In 1781, he came to Province of Quebec (1763–91), Canada and joined Butler's Rangers until the regiment was disbanded in 1784. Macdonell moved to York (Toronto), where he served as a Sheriff for the Home District, Ontario, Home District from 1792 to 1805. He was elected to the 3rd Parliament of Upper Canada representing Glengarry County, Ontario, Glengarry & Prescott County, Ontario, Prescott, serving until 1816. The Queenston Heights is a geographical feature of the Niagara Escarpment immediately above the village of Queenston, Ontario, Canada. Its geography is a promontory formed where the escarpment is divided by the Niagara River. The promontory forms a cliff face of approximately 100 m (approximately 300 ft). John Macdonell
Lieutenant Colonel John Macdonell of Greenfield (19 April 1785 – 14 October 1812) was an aide-de-camp to British Major General Sir Isaac Brock during the War of 1812, dying in the Battle of Queenston Heights. Life He was born on 19 April 1785 in Scotland near Aberchalder and came to Canada when he was seven years old. There, he studied to become a lawyer and was called to the bar at the age of 23, opening his own law office. An interest in politics earned him a seat on the legislature and an appointment as attorney-general. He also became a lieutenant colonel in the York MilitiaMalcomson p. 55 and, at the outbreak of the War of 1812, became secretary and provincial aide-de-camp to General Isaac Brock.
