5th Division (New Zealand)
The 5th Division, New Zealand Military Forces, was raised in the Southern Military District during the Second World War. It consisted of the 3rd and 10th Brigades and the 11th Brigade Group. It was disbanded after the danger of invasion from Japan receded. It appears to have been raised on 1 November 1941, and disbanded on 1 April 1944. Infantry units included the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Canterbury Regiment, the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast Regiment, the 2nd Battalion New Zealand Scots (Westerfield, Sept 42 – July 1943), the 1st Battalion Southland Regiment, and the 3rd Battalion, Nelson Marlborough West Coast Regiment (Blenheim, January–June 1942). 3rd Brigade (New Zealand)
The New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl of Liverpool's Own), affectionately known as The Dinks, was formed on 1 May 1915 as the third brigade of the New Zealand Division, part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. During the First World War it fought in Egypt, against the Senussi, and then on the Western Front. It was disbanded on 4 February 1919. 3rd Field Regiment, Royal New Zealand Artillery
The 3rd Field Regiment, Royal New Zealand Artillery was a territorial force Field Artillery regiment of the New Zealand Army. The unit was formed in 1921 and consisted of the field artillery batteries based in the South Island. The regiment remained in New Zealand during the Second World War and was tasked with training reinforcements for 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The regiment was disbanded in 1990. In 1921 a reorganisation of the New Zealand Military Forces saw the former Canterbury, and Otago Artillery Brigades amalgamated into the 3rd Artillery Brigade of the territorial New Zealand Artillery. The 1st Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry) were a mounted rifles regiment raised just before World War I, raised and based in the region of Canterbury. It can trace its history back to 1864 with the formation of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. New Zealand Scottish Regiment
The New Zealand Scottish Regiment was a regiment of the New Zealand Army. It was formed in 1939 as an infantry regiment and raised two battalions during the Second World War. Although the 1st Battalion was sent overseas during the war as part of the 3rd Division, it never saw combat. The regiment was reformed in 1948 as a reconnaissance regiment of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps, but by the 1960s had been reduced to two independent squadrons. 10th Infantry Brigade (New Zealand)
The 10th Infantry Brigade was a brigade of the New Zealand Military Forces formed on two separate occasions during the Second World War. The brigade was first formed as part of the 2nd New Zealand Division, just prior to the Battle of Crete. It consisted of a variety of New Zealand artillery and support units operating as Infantry, as well as two Greek Infantry regiments. The 10th Brigade was absorbed by 4th Brigade part way through the battle. The 10th Brigade was formed for the second time in New Zealand as a territorial force formation in November 1941 and became part of the 5th Division.
