The 5th Arabian Gulf Cup ( ar, دورة كأس الخليج العربي الخامسة) was the fifth edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup. The tournament was held at the Al-Shaab Stadium in Baghdad, Iraq and took place between 23 March and 9 April 1979. Hosts Iraq won their first ever title after defeating Saudi Arabia 2–0 on 8 April 1979, becoming the second team to win the competition after Kuwait. Originally, the tournament was scheduled to take place in 1978 and hosted in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, but it was delayed after the UAE gave up their hosting rights. Hussein Saeed Mohammed ( ar, حسين سعيد محمد, born 21 January 1958) is an Iraqi former association football, footballer who played as a Forward (association football), forward for the Iraqi Premier League club Al-Talaba SC, Al-Talaba and the Iraq national football team, Iraqi national team and is a former president of the Iraq Football Association. Saeed is in ninth place in the List of top international association football goal scorers by country, list of top international goal scorers, with 78 goals. Along with Ahmed Radhi, he is considered to be the best Iraqi player of the 20th century and features in 25th place in Asia's Best Players of the Century list. Hussein is currently the Iraqi national team's highest scoring player with 78 goals. Saeed started his professional football career at the age of 17, when he joined the Iraq national varsity football team and won the 1975 Arab Schools Games gold medal.
