57th Street (Manhattan)
57th Street is a broad thoroughfare in the New York City borough of Manhattan, one of the major two-way, east-west streets in the borough's grid. As with Manhattan's other "crosstown" streets, it is divided into its east and west sections at Fifth Avenue. The street runs from a small park overlooking the East River in the east to the West Side Highway along the Hudson River in the west. 57th Street runs through the neighborhoods of Sutton Place, Midtown Manhattan, and Hell's Kitchen from east to west. 57th Street was created under the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. It was developed as a mainly residential street in the mid-19th century. The central portion of 57th Street was developed as an artistic hub starting in the 1890s, with the development of Carnegie Hall. The section between Fifth and Eighth Avenues is two blocks south of Central Park. The 57th Street station is a metro station, station on the IND Sixth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 57th Street (Manhattan), 57th Street and Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) in Manhattan, it is served by the F (New York City Subway service), F train at all times and the Fd (New York City Subway service), <F> train during rush hours in the peak direction. North of the station, the Sixth Avenue Line turns east and becomes the IND 63rd Street Line. First announced in 1962, the 57th Street station was opened on July 1, 1968, at the cost of $13.2 million. The station was a terminal station until 1989, after which all service was extended to 21st Street–Queensbridge (IND 63rd Street Line), 21st Street–Queensbridge. The 57th Street station was an express station on the demolished IRT Second Avenue Line in Manhattan, New York City. It had two levels. The lower level had three tracks and two island platforms and served trains coming from the Bronx. The upper level had two tracks and one island platform and served trains coming from Queens, from the IRT Flushing Line, and IRT Astoria Line. The next stop to the north was 65th Street for local trains going to the Bronx, and Queensboro Plaza for trains going to Queens. The next express stop was 86th Street on Bronx-bound trains. 55th–56th–57th Street is a commuter rail station in Hyde Park, Chicago that serves the Metra Electric Line north to Millennium Station and south to University Park, Blue Island, and South Chicago; and the South Shore Line to Gary and South Bend, Indiana. The South Shore Line calls the station 57th Street. It is the closest station to the Museum of Science and Industry, and also serves the residential neighborhood adjoining the University of Chicago. As of 2018, the station is the 39th busiest of Metra's 236 non-downtown stations, with an average of 1,133 weekday boardings.
