54th Berlin International Film Festival
The 54th annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 5–15 February 2004. The festival opened with out of competition film ''Cold Mountain (film), Cold Mountain'' by Anthony Minghella. ''25 Degrees in Winter'' by Stéphane Vuillet served as the closing film. The Golden Bear was awarded to German-Turkish film ''Head-On (film), Head-On'' directed by Fatih Akın. The retrospective dedicated to films from 1967 to 1976 titled ''New Hollywood 1967-1976. Trouble in Wonderland'' was shown at the festival. It focuses on the films from the period known as New Hollywood, New Hollywood or American New Wave, and attended by some of the film-makers and actors of that era including Peter Davis (director), Peter Davis, Peter Fonda, William Greaves, Monte Hellman and Melvin Van Peebles. Cold Mountain (film)
''Cold Mountain'' is a 2003 epic period war film written and directed by Anthony Minghella. The film is based on the bestselling 1997 novel of the same name by Charles Frazier. It stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, and Renée Zellweger with Eileen Atkins, Brendan Gleeson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jack White, Giovanni Ribisi, Donald Sutherland, and Ray Winstone in supporting roles. The film tells the story of a wounded deserter from the Confederate army close to the end of the American Civil War, who journeys home to reunite with the woman he loves. Melvin Van Peebles
Melvin Van Peebles (born Melvin Peebles; August 21, 1932 – September 21, 2021) was an American actor, filmmaker, writer, and composer. He worked as an active filmmaker into the 2000s. His feature film debut, ''The Story of a Three-Day Pass'' (1967), was based on his own French-language novel ' and was shot in France, as it was difficult for a black American director to get work at the time. The film won an award at the San Francisco International Film Festival which gained him the interest of Hollywood studios, leading to his American feature debut '' Watermelon Man'', in 1970. Eschewing further overtures from Hollywood, he used the successes he had so far to bankroll his work as an independent filmmaker. Sylvia Chang
Sylvia Chang (born 21 July 1953) is a Taiwanese actress, writer, singer, producer and director. In 1992, she was a member of the jury at the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival. In 2018, she was one of the jury members of the main competition section at the 75th Venice International Film Festival. Early life Chang was born in Chiayi, Taiwan. She dropped out of school when she was 16, and started her career as a radio DJ. When she was 18 years old she acted in her first film. Career Chang acted in her first film, ''The Tattooed Dragon'' (龍虎金剛) (1973), when she was 18 years old. Chang often attempted to do her own stunts in the four-part film series ''Aces Go Places''. ''20 30 40'' is a 2004 Taiwanese film directed by Sylvia Chang. Gabriele Salvatores (born 30 July 1950) is an Italian Academy Award-winning film director and screenwriter. Biography Born in Naples, Salvatores debuted as a theatre director in 1972, founding in Milan the Teatro dell'Elfo, for which he directed several avant-garde pieces until 1989. In that year, he directed his third feature film, ''Marrakech Express'', which was followed in 1990 by '' Turné''. Both films shared a group of actor-friends, including Diego Abatantuono and Fabrizio Bentivoglio, who will be present in many of his later movies.
