515 Army Base Workshop
515 Army Base Workshop is a wing of Indian Army Corps of EME, Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) of the Indian Army. The 515 Army Base Workshop is one of the eight Army workshops located across India. The headquarters, Base Workshop Group, is in Meerut. These workshops come under the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers and employ an estimated 18,000 civilian workforce. The EME kept 97 per cent of the equipment in operationally fit condition during Kargil War, Operation Vijay. Task The unit was tasked in 2002 to build and complete flight trials of spares for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) IAI Searcher, Searcher and the indigenously developed UAV DRDO Nishant, Nishant. The workshop also manufactures spares of various kinds of equipment and weapon systems used by Indian Army such as missiles, tanks (T-55 and T-72), Infantry Combat Vehicles (BMP 1 and BMP-2, BMP 2), Artillery guns (130 mm FD Gun and 155 mm Bofors guns). Indian Army Corps Of EME
The Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) is an arms and service branch of the Indian Army. The Corps has varying responsibilities related to the design, development, trial, inspection and refit of weapon systems and equipment. They also provide technical advice to units and conduct recovery operations in peace and war. History The British Army formed the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) on 1 October 1942, in order to put the responsibilities of repairing and maintaining all British Army equipment under one unit. Previously, this was done by different corps like the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, the Corps of Royal Engineers and the Royal Army Service Corps. Soon, the need for an equivalent of the REME was felt in British Indian Army too.
