511th Bombardment Squadron
The 511th Bombardment Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was last assigned to the 351st Bombardment Group at Fairfax Field, Kansas, where it was inactivated on 27 June 1949. The squadron was first activated during World War II, as a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit. After training in the United states, it deployed to the European Theater of Operations, where it participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany. It earned two Distinguished Unit Citations for its combat actions. Following V-E Day, the squadron returned to the United States, where it was inactivated in August 1945. It was activated in the reserves in 1947, but does not appear to have been fully manned or equipped. In 1985, the squadron was consolidated with the 311th Attack Squadron, which served briefly in 1969 as a training unit for Cessna A-37 Dragonfly pilots during the Vietnam War. 511th Heavy Panzer Battalion
The 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion (german: "schwere Panzerabteilung 502") was a German heavy tank battalion during World War II. The battalion was the first unit to receive and field the Tiger I. It fought on the Eastern front. It was one of the most successful German heavy tank battalions, claiming the destruction of 1,400 tanks and 2,000 guns. Otto Carius, one of the best German tank aces, was a member. Formation The 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion was formed on 25 May 1942 at Bamberg from the 35th Panzer Training Battalion (german: Panzer-Ersatz-Abteilung 35). 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (511th PIR) was an airborne infantry regiment of the United States Army, first activated during World War II under Colonel Orin D. "Hard Rock" Haugen. It formed the parachute infantry element of the 11th Airborne Division. The full history of the regiment is the subject of the book, ''When Angels Fall: From Toccoa to Tokyo, the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment in World War II'' (2019) by author and historian Jeremy C. Holm whose grandfather served in the regiment's Company D during the war. The 511th Tactical Fighter Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was last assigned to the 10th Tactical Fighter Wing, stationed at RAF Alconbury, England. It was inactivated on 30 December 1992. The squadron was first activated as the 626th Bombardment Squadron in 1943, changing to the 511th Fighter-Bomber Squadron a few months later. After training in the United States, it moved to England in March 1944, helping prepare for Operation Overlord by attacking targets in France. Following D-Day, the squadron moved to the continent, providing close air support for Allied forces. The squadron earned a Distinguished Unit Citation and was cited in the Order of the Day by the Belgian Army.
