5th Infantry Division (Vietnam People's Army)
The VC 5th Infantry Division was a Division (military), division of the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War and later became part of the People's Army of Vietnam. History The division was formed on 23 October 1965 from the 4th "Đồng Nai" Regiment and the newly formed 5th Regiment, which was drawn from local forces. The division later comprised the 274th Regiment (Vietnamese: 4th "Đồng Nai" Regiment) and 275th Regiment (Vietnamese: "Cá Gô" 55 Regiment) plus supporting units. The VC 5th Division's headquarters were located in northeast Phước Tuy Province, Phước Tuy, in the Mây Tào Mountains; the 274th Regiment's headquarters were located in the Hát Dịch area and the 275th Regiment's headquarters were located somewhere in the Mây Tào Mountains, generally known as the May Tao Secret Zone, although the precise locations are unknown. Division (military)
A division is a large military unit or Formation (military), formation, usually consisting of between 10,000 and 25,000 soldiers. In most armies, a division is composed of several regiments or brigades; in turn, several divisions typically make up a corps. Historically, the division has been the default combined arms unit capable of independent Military tactics, operations. Smaller combined arms units, such as the American regimental combat team (RCT) during World War II, were used when conditions favored them. In recent times, modern Western militaries have begun adopting the smaller brigade combat team (similar to the RCT) as the default combined arms unit, with the division to which they belong being less important. Biên Hòa (邊和) ( )) is a former province of South Vietnam originally formed in 1832 containing areas of Đồng Nai province, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province and Bình Phước province with total area of over 17.000 km2. Hát Dịch secret zone (mật khu Hát Dịch, chiến khu Hát Dịch) was an area within South Vietnam. It covered the area where the borders of Phước Tuy Province, Phước Tuy, Long Khánh Province, Long Khánh and Biên Hòa Province, Biên Hòa Provinces met (today in Đồng Nai Province, Đồng Nai and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu Provinces). Mây Tào Mountains
The Mây Tào Mountains are a set of tortoise shaped mountains 45 kilometres north east of Nui Dat and was primarily located in Bình Tuy Province and partly with the Phước Tuy Province and Long Khánh Province. Nui Mây Tào was the topographical junction point for the Long Khánh, Bình Tuy and Phước Tuy provinces. During the Vietnam War the mountains were used as a headquarters for the Vietcong (VC) 5th Division and 275th Regiment, known as May Tao Secret Zone and Base Area 300, and was a well-developed, heavily dug-in, tunnelled and fortified base area.
