49th North Carolina Infantry Regiment
The 49th North Carolina Infantry Regiment was a Confederate States Army regiment during the American Civil War attached to the Army of Northern Virginia. Organization and Training The companies of the 49th North Carolina Infantry Regiment were recruited in the following counties: :Company A - McDowell and Rutherford counties :Company B - Cleveland and Davidson counties :Company C - Rowan County :Company D - Moore County :Company E - Iredell County :Company F - Mecklenburg County :Company G - Cleveland County :Company H - Gaston County :Company I - Catawba County :Company K - Lincoln and Gaston counties Many of the recruits were members that had enlisted earlier in the war, but for lack of weapons were not able to be mustered into service. Battle Of Fort Stedman
The Battle of Fort Stedman, also known as the Battle of Hare's Hill, was fought on March 25, 1865, during the final weeks of the American Civil War. The Union Army fortification in the siege lines around Petersburg, Virginia, was attacked in a pre-dawn Confederate assault by troops led by Maj. Gen. John B. Gordon. The attack was the last serious attempt by Confederate troops to break the Siege of Petersburg. Cleveland County is a county located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the western Piedmont, on the southern border of the U.S. state of North Carolina. Rutherford County is a county in the southwestern area of the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 64,444. Its county seat is Rutherfordton. McDowell County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 44,578. Its county seat is Marion. McDowell County comprises the Marion, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Hickory-Lenoir, NC Combined Statistical Area. A company is a military unit, typically consisting of 80–250 soldiers and usually commanded by a major or a captain. Most companies are formed of three to seven platoons, although the exact number may vary by country, unit type, and structure. Usually several companies are grouped as a battalion or regiment, the latter of which is sometimes formed by several battalions. The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War.
