46th (South Devonshire) Regiment Of Foot
The 46th (South Devonshire) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1741. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot to form the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in 1881, becoming the 2nd Battalion of the new regiment. History Early wars The regiment was raised in Newcastle upon Tyne by John Price as John Price's Regiment of Foot in 1741. The regiment proceeded to Scotland and took part in the Battle of Prestonpans in September 1745 during the Jacobite rising. It was ranked as the 57th Regiment of Foot in 1747 but re-ranked as the 46th Regiment of Foot in 1751. The 46th United States Colored Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The unit was originally designated as the 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment (African Descent). The regiment was composed of African American enlisted men commanded by white officers and was authorized by the Bureau of Colored Troops which was created by the United States War Department on May 22, 1863. The 46th Virginia Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly in Virginia and the Carolinas. 46th Infantry Regiment (also called 1st or 2nd Regiment, Wise Legion) was organized in August, 1861. It was soon ordered to North Carolina and placed in a brigade commanded by former governor Henry A. Wise. After Wise fell severely ill with pleurisy (and was confined to bed for a week), Federal forces captured Roanoke Island. Although only 23 Confederates died in the 2-day battle before Wise's second in command surrendered, those dead included Wise's eldest son Capt. 46th Arkansas Infantry (Mounted)
The 46th Arkansas Infantry (Mounted) (1864–1865) was a Confederate Army Mounted Infantry regiment during the American Civil War. While authorized by the State Military Board as an infantry regiment, the unit was mounted for Price's Missouri Expedition and served as mounted infantry. Due to its mounted status, the unit is sometimes referred to as the 46th Arkansas Cavalry when a numerical designation is used. The unit is almost always referred to as either Coleman's Arkansas Cavalry Regiment or Crabtree's Cavalry in official reports from the period. Organization In 1862, Colonel William O. Coleman returned to Carter County, Missouri and recruited heavily among former Missouri State Guard soldiers to form Coleman's Missouri Cavalry Regiment. The 46th North Carolina Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Mustered early in the war near Raleigh, North Carolina, the regiment served in both Walker's Brigade and Cooke's Brigade during the war. Service The 46th was part of the Army of Northern Virginia from its initial muster through the end of the war, seeing action in the major eastern campaigns in Virginia and Maryland in 1862. At Antietam, the 46th was involved in some of the heaviest fighting of the day. They had been ordered to hold West Woods, at "all hazards." According to the Brig. 46th Ohio Infantry
The 46th Ohio Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 46th was armed rather differently from most infantry regiments in the Civil War. In March 1864 many of the regiment's men re-enlisted as the 46th Ohio Veteran Infantry Regiment and received a 30-day furlough. Upon return to its encampment at Scottsboro, Alabama, in April 1864, the regiment exchanged its muzzleloading rifle-muskets for the Spencer repeating rifle. The colonel of the 46th Ohio, Charles C. Walcutt, wrote a manual of arms for the Spencer, and the regiment first employed its Spencers in force at the Battle of Resaca.
