46 Capricorni is a solitary star located around 790 light years away from the Sun in the southern constellation of Capricornus, near the northern border with Aquarius. It is visible to the naked eye as a dim, yellow-hued point of light with an apparent visual magnitude of +5.10. 46 Cap is also known by its Bayer designation of c Capricorni (c Cap), and occasionally as c1 Capricorni to distinguish it from the nearby star c2 Capricorni. It is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of −15.5 km/s. This star has received a stellar classification of G8Iab, which suggests it is a G-type supergiant star, as well as G7.5II-IIICN0.5, which instead indicates a luminosity class between a giant and a bright giant. A Bayer designation is a stellar designation in which a specific star is identified by a Greek or Latin letter followed by the genitive form of its parent constellation's Latin name. The original list of Bayer designations contained 1,564 stars. The brighter stars were assigned their first systematic names by the German astronomer Johann Bayer in 1603, in his star atlas ''Uranometria''. Bayer catalogued only a few stars too far south to be seen from Germany, but later astronomers (including Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille and Benjamin Apthorp Gould) supplemented Bayer's catalog with entries for southern constellations. In astronomy, Durchmusterung or Bonner Durchmusterung (BD) is an astrometric star catalogue of the whole sky, compiled by the Bonn Observatory in Germany from 1859 to 1903. The name comes from ('run-through examination'), a German word used for a systematic survey of objects or data. The term has sometimes been used for other astronomical surveys, including not only stars, but also the search for other celestial objects. John Flamsteed (19 August 1646 – 31 December 1719) was an English astronomer and the first Astronomer Royal. He also made the first recorded observations of Uranus, although he mistakenly catalogued it as a star, and he laid the foundation stone for the Royal Greenwich Observatory. Beta Aquarii is a single star in the constellation of Aquarius. It has the official name Sadalsuud (), and sometimes is identified as β Aquarii, abbreviated Beta Aqr or β Aqr.
