4341 Poseidon ('' prov. designation:'' ) is a rare-type asteroid classified as near-Earth object of the Apollo group, approximately in diameter. It was discovered by American astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory on 29 May 1987. The asteroid was named after Poseidon from Greek mythology. Orbit and classification ''Poseidon'' orbits the Sun at a distance of 0.6–3.1  AU once every 2 years and 6 months (908 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.68 and an inclination of 12 ° with respect to the ecliptic. As no precoveries were taken, the asteroid's observation arc begins with its discovery in 1987. ''Poseidon'' may be associated with the Taurid Complex of meteor showers. It has an Earth minimum orbital intersection distance of , which corresponds to 75.6 lunar distances. Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker (June 24, 1929 – August 13, 2021) was an American astronomer and a co-discoverer of Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9, Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9. She discovered 32 comets (then a record for the most by an individual) and more than 500 asteroids. Having earned degrees in history, political science, and English literature, she had little interest in science until she met and married geologist Eugene Merle Shoemaker. Her career in astronomy began when she demonstrated good Stereopsis, stereoscopic vision, a particularly valuable quality for looking for objects in near-Earth space. Despite the fact that her degrees were not in science, having that visual ability motivated the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) to hire her as a research assistant on a team led by her husband. Minimum orbit intersection distance (MOID) is a measure used in astronomy to assess potential close approaches and collision risks between astronomical objects. It is defined as the distance between the closest points of the osculating orbits of two bodies. Of greatest interest is the risk of a collision with Earth. Earth MOID is often listed on comet and asteroid databases such as the JPL Small-Body Database. MOID values are also defined with respect to other bodies as well: Jupiter MOID, Venus MOID and so on. The Taurids are an annual meteor shower, associated with the comet Encke. The Taurids are actually two separate showers, with a Southern and a Northern component.
