400 Trail
The 400 State Trail is a rail trail between Reedsburg, Wisconsin, Reedsburg and Elroy, Wisconsin, Elroy, Wisconsin. It is designed for foot, bicycle, equestrian, snowmobile traffic. It is designated as a multi-use trail, offering recreational access to the routes, and is open to the public. History The original railway was constructed from Madison, Wisconsin to Winona, Minnesota, starting in 1870, by a predecessor of the Chicago and North Western Railway, the Baraboo Air Line Railroad Company. It was so named because of the straightness of the Air-line railroad route. The railway became the route of the ''Minnesota 400'', a named train of the C&NW that connected Chicago with Southern Wisconsin and Southern Minnesota. It eventually became the route of the South Dakota destined ''Dakota 400''. A rail trail is a shared-use path on railway right of way. Rail trails are typically constructed after a railway has been abandoned and the track has been removed, but may also share the right of way with active railways, light rail, or streetcars (rails with trails), or with disused track. As shared-use paths, rail trails are primarily for non-motorized traffic including pedestrians, bicycles, horseback riders, skaters, and cross-country skiers, although snowmobiles and ATVs may be allowed. The Chicago and North Western Depot is a former railway station in Reedsburg, Wisconsin, which has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. The station served the Chicago and North Western Railway along the Twin Cities 400 line for much of its life. It was built in 1906, and operated as a passenger station until closing in 1963.
