4 Square (game Show)
''4 Square'' was a British game show that aired on BBC One, BBC1 from 3 May 1988 to 31 October 1991. It was hosted by Michael Groth for the first series and then hosted by John Sachs for three subsequent series. Gameplay Two contestants competed on each episode, one playing the colour yellow and the other playing green. Pair the Squares Pair the Squares was a ''Concentration (game), Concentration/Memory-typed'' game. A 6-by-6 grid of 36 numbered squares was used; hidden behind the numbers were four each of nine different symbols. The contestants took turns choosing four squares each. When a pair of symbols was uncovered, that contestant scored two points and claimed those squares in their colour. Any unmatched symbols were covered again at the end of a contestant's turn. Completing a "4 Square" (four adjacent squares that formed a 2-by-2-block, such as 8/9/14/15) awarded five bonus points. John Sachs
John Sachs (born 3 May 1957) is a British television presenter, voiceover and commentator. He narrated the original series of ''Gladiators (1992 British TV series), Gladiators'', and was a longtime DJ on London's radio station Capital London. Sachs spent 12 years on Capital FM, where he won Variety Club ILR Presenter of the Year and Silver at the World Radio awards in New York. He has also worked at Jazz FM (UK), Jazz FM, BBC Radio 2, and WHYI-FM, Y100 in Florida, United States. His television credits include ''Gladiators'', ''4 Square (game show), 4 Square'', ''Take Your Pick!'', ''The Brian Conley Show'' and ''Dancing on Ice''. He has worked on a variety of television and radio adverts. He was also a presenter on Swansea Sound in Swansea, Wales. Pebble Mill Studios
Pebble Mill Studios was the BBC's television studio complex located in Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, United Kingdom, which served as the headquarters for BBC Birmingham from 1971 until 2004. The nine-acre site was opened by Princess Anne on 10 June 1971, and in addition to the studios contained two canteens, a post office, gardens, a seven-storey office block, and an outside broadcasting (OB) base. As well as being the home of '' Midlands Today'' and BBC Radio WM, programmes produced at Pebble Mill included ''Pebble Mill at One'', ''The Archers'', ''Top Gear'', '' Doctors'', '' Telly Addicts'' and ''Gardeners' World''. BBC Elstree Centre
The BBC Elstree Centre, sometimes referred to as the BBC Elstree Studios, is a television production facility, currently owned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The complex is located between Eldon Avenue and Clarendon Road in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England. This site was the first of several such complexes colloquially referred to as "Elstree Studios" located in the area. Originally created as a film studio in 1914, the site was converted for use as a television studio in 1960, becoming the main television production site for Lew Grade's ATV franchise for the ITV network. After ATV became Central Television in the early 1980s and moved to a new Midlands-based complex, this site was sold to the BBC in 1984. BBC One
BBC One is a British free-to-air public broadcast television network owned and operated by the BBC. Concentration (game)
Concentration, also known as Memory, Shinkei-suijaku (Japanese meaning "nervous breakdown"), Matching Pairs, Match Match, Match Up, Pelmanism, Pexeso or simply Pairs, is a card game in which all of the cards are laid face down on a surface and two cards are flipped face up over each turn. The object of the game is to turn over pairs of matching cards. Concentration can be played with any number of players or as a solitaire or patience game. It is a particularly good game for young children, though adults may find it challenging and stimulating as well. The scheme is often used in quiz shows (in fact, several game shows have used its name in their titles) and can be employed as an educational game. BBC Genome Project
The BBC Genome Project is an online searchable database of programme listings initially based upon the contents of the ''Radio Times'' from the first issue in 1923 to 2009. Television listings from post-2009 can be accessed via the BBC Programmes site. History Prior BBC Genome is not the first online searchable database. In April 2006, they gave the public access to Infax – their only electronic programme database at the time. It contained around 900,000 entries but not every programme ever broadcast, and it ceased operation in December 2007. The front page of the website is still available to see via the Internet Archive. After Infax ceased, a message on the website said that it would be incorporating in the information into individual programme pages. In 2012, Infax was replaced by the database Fabric but this is only for internal use within the BBC.
