3rd Vanier Cup
The 3rd Vanier Cup was played on November 25, 1967, at Varsity Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, and decided the CIAU football champion for the 1967 season. The Alberta Golden Bears won their first ever championship by defeating the McMaster Marauders by a score of 10–9. This was the first national championship that required semi-final playoffs to determine the two teams that would meet in the Vanier Cup game. This also now represented the CIAU (now U Sports) National Football Championship, whereas before it was solely a national invitational event under no defined league. Varsity Stadium
Varsity Stadium is an outdoor collegiate football stadium located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is home to the Toronto Varsity Blues, the athletic teams of the University of Toronto. Athletic events have been hosted on the site since 1898; the current stadium was built in 2007 to replace the original permanent stadium built in 1911. Clare Drake
Clare James Drake (October 9, 1928 – May 13, 2018) was a Canadian ice hockey coach. He was the most successful coach in Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's hockey history. In 28 years as the head coach of the University of Alberta men's ice hockey team, he coached the Alberta Golden Bears to six University Cup championships and 17 Canada West conference championships. The "dean of coaching," Clare developed the game for more than 40 years, coaching at the high school, university, Olympic and WHA level. The only university coach to win a national championship in both hockey and football in the same year (1967), he was instrumental in the development of the National Coaching Certification and Coach Mentorship Programs. Valkmar Erich "Val" Schneider is a retired Canadian football executive and player. Schneider grew up in Boyle Street in Edmonton, Alberta and attended Victoria Composite High School. He attended the University of Alberta, earning a BPE degree in 1966, and Masters of Arts degree in 1969. While attending the University, he also played on their football team from 1963 to 1968, winning four Western Intercollegiate Football League Championships, a Vanier Cup finalist in 1965, and a Vanier Cup championship in 1967. The Vanier Cup (french: Coupe Vanier) is the championship of Canadian university football. It is organized by U Sports football and is currently played between the winners of the Uteck Bowl and the Mitchell Bowl. It is named after Georges Vanier, the former governor general of Canada and was first awarded in 1965 to the winner of an invitational event contested between two teams that were selected by a panel. In 1967, the trophy was declared the official "CIAU National Football Championship" and a playoff system was instituted. From its creation until 1982, it was known as the Canadian College Bowl. CIAU Football
U Sports football is the highest level of amateur play of Canadian football and operates under the auspices of U Sports (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport). Twenty-seven teams from Canadian universities are divided into four athletic conferences, drawing from the four regional associations of U Sports: Canada West Universities Athletic Association, Ontario University Athletics, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, and Atlantic University Sport. The Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas are the sports teams that represent the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
