3rd North-West Legislative Assembly
The 3rd North-West Legislative Assembly was constituted after the 1894 North-West Territories general election which took place on October 31, 1984. It lasted from 1894 to 1898. Several important developments happened during this Assembly. The Northwest Territories was granted a Premier and a full Executive Council in 1897, and the Yukon was carved from the territory in 1898 due to the territorial government trying to collect taxes from settlers heading to the Klondike Gold Rush. The 1894 North-West Territories general election was held on 31 October 1894. This was the third general election in the history of the North-West Territories, Canada. Francis "Frank" Oliver (born Francis Robert Oliver Bowsfield; September 1, 1853 – March 31, 1933) was a Canadian federal minister, politician, and journalist/publisher from the Northwest Territories and later Alberta. As Minister of the Interior (Canada), Minister of the Interior, he was responsible for discriminatory Canadian government policies that targeted First Nations in Canada, First Nations' land rights and Black immigration. Early life Oliver was born Francis Bowsfield in Peel County, Ontario, Peel County, Canada West, just west of Toronto. He was the son of Allan Bowsfield and Hannah (Anna) Lundy. Edward Fearon
Edward L. Fearon (September 20, 1859November 3, 1933) was a Canadian politician. He served on the North-West Legislative Assembly for Medicine Hat from 1894 to 1898. Early life Edward L. Fearon was born September 20, 1859 in Scotland. Fearon moved to Kingston, Ontario in 1878 and joined the North-West Mounted Police where he was stationed at Fort Walsh. Political life Fearon contested the 1894 North-West Territories general election in the Medicine Hat electoral district against incumbent Thomas Tweed. In the years prior to the election, the Medicine Hat community became divided with Tweed around the issues of prohibition, hospital supply purchasing and obtaining government contracts for friends. Fearon was a popular rancher near Maple Creek. During the campaign Tweed's opponents depicted him as hostile to labour, against provincehood, and an ineffective representative. Charles Alexander Magrath
Charles Alexander Magrath (April 22, 1860 – October 30, 1949) was a Canadian land surveyor and statesman. He conducted foundation surveys of the North-West Territories (NWT) from 1878 until 1885. He joined Sir Alexander Tilloch Galt and Elliott Torrance Galt in their western industrial enterprises as a surveyor, later becoming Elliott's assistant and Land Commissioner of the North Western Coal and Navigation Company. He was also the first mayor of Lethbridge, Alberta District, NWT, which has a major street (Mayor Magrath Drive) named after him.
