3M Computer
3M was a goal first proposed in the early 1980s by Raj Reddy and his colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) as a minimum specification for academic/technical workstations: at least a ''megabyte'' of memory, a ''megapixel'' display and a ''Instructions per second, million instructions per second'' (MIPS) processing power. It was also often said that it should cost no more than a "''megapenny''" (). At that time a typical desktop computer such as an early IBM Personal Computer might have 1/8 of a megabyte of memory (128K), 1/4 of a million pixels (640400 monochrome display), and run at 1/3 million instructions per second ( 8088). The concept was inspired by the Xerox Alto which had been designed in the 1970s at the PARC (company), Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. Several Altos were donated to CMU, Stanford, and MIT in 1979. An early 3M computer was the PERQ Workstation made by Three Rivers Computer Corporation. The PERQ had a 1 million Pascal (programming language)#Pascal-P, ...

3-M Syndrome
3-M syndrome or 3M3 is a rare hereditary disorder characterized by severe growth retardation, facial dysmorphia, and skeletal abnormalities. The name 3-M is derived from the initials of the three researchers who first identified it: Miller, McKusick, and Malvaux and report their findings in the medical literature in 1972. Mutations in any one of the following three genes: ''CUL7'', ''OBSL1'', and ''CCDC8'' are responsible for the occurrence of this disorder. It is inherited through an autosomal recessive pattern and considered very rare, so far less than 100 cases worldwide have been identified. Diagnosis is based on the presence of clinical features. Genetic testing can confirm the diagnosis and identify the specific gene involved. Treatment is aimed at addressing the growth and skeletal problems and may include surgical bone lengthening, adaptive aids, and physical therapy. An endocrinologist may assist with growth hormone replacement and appropriate evaluations during puberty ...

Myasishchev 3M
The Myasishchev M-4 ''Molot'' (russian: Молот (Hammer), USAF/DoD reporting name "Type 37", ASCC reporting name Bison) was a four-engined strategic bomber designed by Vladimir Mikhailovich Myasishchev and manufactured by the Soviet Union in the 1950s to provide a Long Range Aviation bomber capable of attacking targets in North America. The aircraft fell quite short of its intended range and was not really capable of attacking the most valuable targets in the United States. As this became clear, production was shut down. In spite of the failure to produce a capable strategic design and the resulting small numbers, the M-4 nevertheless sparked fears of a "bomber gap" when 18 of the aircraft were flown in a public demonstration on May Day in 1954. The US responded by building hundreds of Boeing B-47s and B-52s to counter this perceived threat. The design was updated with more efficient engines, inflight refuelling support and the removal of the glass nose for optical bombing an ...

Military Mapping Maidens
During World War II the Army Map Service (AMS), a heritage organization of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, was losing a significant amount of its workforce at a time when demand for its products was surging. "Military Mapping Maidens," also known colloquially as "3Ms," stepped in to create maps to aid war efforts. Training In 1941, the 77th Congress signed a bill that allocated additional funding to map areas that the Secretary of War deemed “strategic.” Due to inadequate map coverage for the war, some maps of the Pacific were from the 19th century, federal government created training programs to address their cartographic needs. Starting in 1942 select coeducational and women's colleges established training programs in Military Map Making (3M courses). This program was established as part of the Engineering, Science and Management Wartime Training (ESMWT) program under the United States Office of Education. Edith Putnam Parker (1886-1961) was put in charge of th ...

Springboard
A springboard or diving board is used for diving and is a board that is itself a spring, i.e. a linear flex-spring, of the cantilever type. Springboards are commonly fixed by a hinge at one end (so they can be flipped up when not in use), and the other end usually hangs over a swimming pool, with a point midway between the hinge and the end resting on an adjustable fulcrum. Springboard materials Modern springboards are made out of a single-piece extrusion of aircraft-grade aluminum. The Maxiflex Model B, the board used in all major competitive diving events, is made out of such aluminum, and is heat treated for a yield strength of . The slip-resistant surface of the board is created using an epoxy resin, finished with a laminate of flint silica and alumina in between the top coats of resin. This thermal-cured resin is aqua-colored to match the water of a clean pool. Adjustment of the spring constant The spring constant of a springboard is usually adjusted by way of a fulcrum ...
