39th Field Artillery Regiment
The 39th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. Lineage Constituted in the National Army as the 39th Field Artillery and assigned to the 13th Division, 5 July 1918. Distinctive unit insignia *Description A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Gules, issuing from base a phoenix Or rising from flames Proper. Attached below the shield a Red scroll inscribed “CELERITAS IN CONFICIENDO” in Gold letters. *Symbolism The shield is red for Artillery. The fabulous bird, the phoenix, symbolizes the reactivation and restoration of the organization. *Background The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 39th Field Artillery Battalion on 25 February 1941. Field artillery is a category of mobile artillery used to support armies in the field. These weapons are specialized for mobility, tactical proficiency, short range, long range, and extremely long range target engagement. Until the early 20th century, field artillery were also known as foot artillery, for while the guns were pulled by beasts of burden (often horses), the gun crews would usually march on foot, thus providing fire support mainly to the infantry. This was in contrast to horse artillery, whose emphasis on speed while supporting cavalry units necessitated lighter guns and crews riding on horseback. Whereas horse artillery has been superseded by self-propelled artillery, field artillery has survived to this day both in name and mission, albeit with motor vehicles towing the guns (this towed artillery arrangement is often called mobile artillery), carrying the crews and transporting the ammunition. The 38th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army. History On August 17, 1918, the 38th Field Artillery was organized as a regiment at Camp Lewis, Washington. It trained at that station until February 10, 1919, when the regiment was demobilized. Subsequently, on October 1, 1933, the 38th Field Artillery Regiment was reconstituted as an inactive unit of the regular Army. The 38th Field Artillery next appears as a part of the Second Infantry Division. On October 10, 1939, the Fifteenth Field Artillery Regiment at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, was re-organized and given a 3rd battalion. The 13th Division was an infantry division of the United States Army. It was established at Camp Lewis, Washington, in 1918, during World War I. The war ended before the division saw combat, and it was inactivated in 1919. Creation The 13th Division was activated at Camp Lewis, Washington on July 16, 1918 as part of the U.S. military mobilization for World War I.
