334th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)
The 334th Infantry Division (German: ''334. Infanterie-Division'') was a German Army infantry division in World War II. Originally formed in November 1942, it surrendered to the Allies at the conclusion of the Tunisian Campaign in May 1943. The division was reconstituted on 3 June 1943 in France within the 1st Army, with the staff of the 80th Infantry Division (which had only just been formed a few days prior) as well as remnants of the old division and replacement units. It spent the remainder of the war serving on the Italian Front. Operational history Tunisia The 334th Infantry Division was set up on 25 November 1942 as " Kriemhilde" unit of the military districts XIII, XVII and XVIII at the Grafenwoehr training area. Grafenwoehr Training Area
Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA) is a United States Army training base located near Grafenwöhr, Bavaria, Germany. At 232 km2, it is the largest US training facility in Europe. The base is operated by 7th Army Joint Multinational Training Command. Facilities include the Tower Barracks. History The training area was established in 1907, and used to train troops for the III Royal Bavarian Corps. Undergoing a major expansion from 96 to 230 square kilometers in 1938, the base was used by the ''Wehrmacht'' to practice ''blitzkrieg'' tactics. During the course of the war a myriad of different units were trained in the area, including foreign volunteers of the Wehrmacht and ''Waffen-SS'', as well as four divisions of the Italian Social Republic's ''National Republican Army''. Légion Impériale
The ''Légion impériale'' was a military unit created by the Vichy French government in November 1942, with the support of Nazi Ambassador Otto Abetz, to oppose the Allies, who had invaded North Africa in order to drive the Axis out. In April 1943 it was renamed ''Légion des Volontaires Française de Tunisie'' (Legion of French Volunteers of Tunisia), and it went into captivity upon the Axis surrender in Africa in May. Organization They were only able to raise a single weak battalion for the ''Legion'', called the ''Phalange Africaine'' (African phalanx). It consisted of 400-450 men, about 2/3 French and 1/3 Algerians. Commanding officers The battalion was commanded by Colonel Simon Petru Cristofini. Majaz Al Bab
Majaz al Bab ( ar, مجاز الباب), also known as Medjez el Bab, or as Membressa under the Roman Empire, is a town in northern Tunisia. It is located at the intersection of roads GP5 and GP6, in the ''Plaine de la Medjerda''. Commonwealth war grave site There is a Commonwealth War Grave site at Majaz al Bab, largely dedicated to those who fell during the North African campaign, including Operation Torch and the Tunisia Campaign, during World War II. The Medjez-El-Bab Memorial commemorates almost 2,000 men of the British First Army who died during the operations in Algeria and Tunisia between 8 November 1942 and 19 February 1943, and those of the British First and British Eighth Armies who died in operations in the same areas between 20 February and 13 May 1943, and who have no known graves. Djebel Manson

Djebel (1937–1958) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse, who won 15 of 22 races during 1939–1942 including the Prix d'Essai, 2000 Guineas and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He was later a leading sire in France and is responsible for the survival of the Byerley Turk sire line into the 21st century. Breeding Djebel was a bay stallion owned and bred by renowned horseman Marcel Boussac. He was sired by Tourbillon, who had won the French Derby and the Prix Lupin, and went on to become a notable sire. Djebel's dam, Loika, was a minor winner by Gay Crusader and out of Coeur a Coeur. Gay Crusader was the 1917 U.K. Triple Crown winner, and by the influential Bayardo. Coeur a Coeur was by Teddy, whose grandsire was the 1899 English Triple Crown champion Flying Fox. Run For Tunis
The Run for Tunis was part of the Tunisia Campaign which took place during November and December 1942 during the Second World War. Once French opposition to the Allied Operation Torch landings had ceased in mid-November, the Allies made a rapid advance by a division-sized force east from Algeria, to capture Tunis and forestall an Axis build up in Tunisia and narrowly failed. Some Allied troops were fewer than short of Tunis by late November but the defenders counter-attacked and pushed them back nearly , to positions which had stabilised by the end of the year. Background Allies The planners of Operation Torch had assumed that Vichy would oppose the landings and the invasion convoys had a preponderance of infantry to meet ground opposition.
