30th Hawaii Territorial Legislature
The Thirtieth Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii was the final session of the Hawaii Territorial Legislature. The session convened in Honolulu, Hawaii, and ran from February 18 until May 2, 1959. This was the first session to comprise 25 senators and 51 representatives, avoiding potential equal representation which occurred in the House of Representatives during the 24th Hawaii Territorial Legislature. Lanai ( haw, Lānai, , , also ,) is the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands and the smallest publicly accessible inhabited island in the chain. It is colloquially known as the Pineapple Island because of its past as an island-wide pineapple plantation. Noboru Miyake
Noboru Miyake (, April 19, 18961988) was a Japanese American politician in Hawaii. Early life and education Miyake was born in Waimea on April 19, 1896. He was the fifth of 10 children, and the son of a Japanese immigrant who had moved to Kauai to work on a sugar plantation. Miyake dropped out of school as a teenager and began working, first on the sugar plantation, then for Waimea Garage and Electric Company. He took correspondence courses in automotive engineering, law, and business management. Career Miyake joined the Hawaii National Guard in 1916. During World War I he was stationed at Fort Armstrong and Schofield Barracks. After his discharge from the military, he bough Waimea Garage and Electric Company from William Olin Cromwell and became its president. He won a seat on the Kauai Board of Supervisors in 1930. Wilfred Tsukiyama
Wilfred Chomatsu "Tsuky" Tsukiyama (March 22, 1897 – January 6, 1966) was an attorney, Territorial Senator, and chief justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. He was the first Japanese American elected to the Territorial Senate of Hawaii, and the first to serve as a state Supreme Court Justice in the United States. Early life Tsukiyama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 22, 1897. His parents, Koken and Hide, were Japanese immigrants who worked on the sugar plantations. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1918. After graduation, Tsukiyama served in the United States Army during World War I. When the war ended, he left the army and enrolled in Coe College, where he studied pre-law. He went on to get a J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School. Sakae Takahashi (politician)
Sakae Takahashi ( ja, 高橋 栄, December 8, 1919April 16, 2001) was a Japanese American politician from Hawaii. Early life and education Takahashi was born on December 8, 1919, in Makaweli. He grew up on a sugar plantation and attended Waimea High School. After high school he studied at the University of Hawaiʻi on a scholarship and joined the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Career After graduating from college, Takahashi joined the Army Reserve and became a second lieutenant in 1941. During World War II he served as a member of the 100th Infantry Battalion. He was the only survivor of 190 men during the battle of Monte Cassino. By the time he was discharged in 1946 he had risen to the rank of major. After leaving the army Takahashi studied law at Rutgers University. When he returned to Hawaii after graduation he worked as an attorney. He was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1950.
