33rd Battalion (Australia)
The 33rd Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. Formed in 1916, the battalion fought on the Western Front during World War I. It was disbanded after the war, but later re-raised as a part-time unit based in New South Wales. During the inter war years, it was amalgamated with other battalions a couple of times before being re-raised in its own right in 1936. During World War II, the battalion remained in Australia and in 1942 was amalgamated with the 13th Battalion, which was disbanded the following year having not served overseas. 2/33rd Battalion (Australia)
The 2/33rd Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army during the Second World War. It was formed as part of the Second Australian Imperial Force in the United Kingdom in June 1940 as the "72nd Battalion" to create the 25th Brigade, which eventually became part of the 7th Division. After the threat of invasion had passed, the battalion was transferred to the Middle East in early 1941, and after a period of garrison duty in the Western Desert, the battalion fought against the Vichy French in the invasion of Syria and Lebanon. Later, in early 1942, in response to Japan's entry to the war, the battalion was transferred back to Australia and after a period of re-organisation and training it was sent to New Guinea where it took part in the Kokoda Track campaign. The 33rd Battalion, CEF, was an infantry battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the Great War. History The battalion was authorized on 7 November 1914 and embarked for Great Britain on 1 April 1916. It was re designated as the 33rd Reserve Battalion, CEF on 6 April 1916 and it provided reinforcements for the Canadian Corps in the field until 6 July 1916, when its personnel were absorbed by the 36th Battalion, CEF. Schutzmannschaft Battalion 33 was a unit of the Estonian Auxiliary Police subordinated to the German '' Ordnungspolizei'' (Order Police) during World War II. It was formed in Tartu and Viljandi during the winter 1941–1942. The battalion had a brass band, but it was sent to Battalion 36 in 1942. In January 1942, the battalion was transported to the Leningrad front without training. In spring 1942, the battalion was reinforced with 200 men. In December 1942, the battalion returned to Estonia and it was given holidays in Pärnu. Afterward, the battalion was taken to Tartu, where it was disbanded.
