32nd Iowa Infantry Regiment
The 32nd Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 32nd Iowa Infantry was organized at Camp Franklin, Dubuque, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on 6 October 1862. The regiment was mustered out on 24 August 1865. Total strength and casualties A total of 1292 men served in the 32nd Iowa at one time or another during its existence. It suffered 6 officers and 101 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 2 officers and 213 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 322 fatalities. John Scott (Iowa Politician)
John Scott (April 24, 1824 – September 23, 1903) was an American politician, businessman, lawyer, and soldier. Born in Jefferson County, Ohio, Scott taught school in Ohio and Kentucky. He studied law in Ohio and was admitted to the Ohio bar. While in Kentucky, he enlisted in the army and took part in the Mexican–American War. In 1854, Scott settled in Nevada, Iowa, where he practiced law and was in real estate. He was elected to the Iowa State Senate. During the American Civil War, Scott was a colonel in the 32nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After the Civil War, Scott was elected Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. Scott wrote books about the Scott family and the 32nd Infantry Regiment. He died in Des Moines, Iowa Des Moines () is the capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Iowa. The 4th Missouri Cavalry Regiment, also known as the Fremont Hussars, was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Elements of the regiment fought at Pea Ridge, Whitney's Lane, Little Blue River, Byram's Ford, Westport, Marais des Cygnes, Marmiton River, and Mine Creek. Davenport is a city in and the county seat of Scott County, Iowa, United States. The state of Iowa played a significant role during the American Civil War in providing food, supplies, troops and officers for the Union army. Prelude to war Iowa had become the 29th state in the Union on December 28, 1846, and the state continued to attract many settlers, both native and foreign-born. Only the extreme northwestern part of the state remained a frontier area. With the development in the 1850s of the Illinois Central and the Chicago and North Western Railway, Iowa's fertile fields were linked with Eastern supply depots as the Civil War began. The colonel () in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force, is the most senior field-grade military officer rank, immediately above the rank of lieutenant colonel and just below the rank of brigadier general. Colonel is equivalent to the naval rank of captain in the other uniformed services.
