2nd Nebraska Cavalry
The 2nd Nebraska Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 2nd Nebraska Cavalry Regiment was initially organized at Omaha, Nebraska, on October 23, 1862, as a nine-month regiment, and served for over one year. They were attached to General Sully's command, who was in a campaign against Indians in Western Nebraska and Dakota, who were forced to move south from Minnesota following the Dakota War of 1862. Battle of Whitestone Hill The 2nd Nebraska participated in the Battle of Whitestone Hill, which began on September 3, 1863, when General Sully's troops engaged upwards of 2,000 warriors under Chief Two Bears of the Yanktonai Sioux. The Dakota War of 1862, also known as the Sioux Uprising, the Dakota Uprising, the Sioux Outbreak of 1862, the Dakota Conflict, the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, or Little Crow's War, was an armed conflict between the United States and several bands of eastern Dakota people, Dakota also known as the Santee Sioux. The present-day state of Nebraska was still a territory of the United States during the American Civil War. It did not achieve statehood until March 1867, two years after the war ended. Nevertheless, the Nebraska Territory contributed significantly to the Union war effort. The Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 had established the 40th parallel north as the dividing line between the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. Robert Wilkinson Furnas
Robert Wilkinson Furnas (May 5, 1824June 1, 1905) was the second governor of Nebraska. Born near Troy, Ohio, and orphaned at the age of eight Furnas was a self-made man. He worked as a farmer, printer, tinsmith, insurance salesman, and postmaster all before getting into politics. He married Mary Elizabeth McComas on October 29, 1845, who died in 1897; and his second was Susannah Emswiler Jameson. He had eight children. Career Furnas came to Nebraska in 1856 at the age of thirty-two and settled in Brownville, Nebraska. Two months later, he published the '' Nebraska Advertiser'', a publication advertising the agricultural opportunities found in Nebraska. He also published the ''Nebraska Farmer'', the first agricultural publication out of Nebraska that is still published to this day. The 1st Nebraska Veteran Cavalry Battalion was a cavalry battalion that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service When the nine-month 2nd Nebraska Cavalry Regiment was mustered out of service in the fall of 1863, Governor Alvin Saunders authorized the raising of an independent battalion of cavalry from the ranks of the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry to serve for the balance of the war. The battalion was organized in four companies at Omaha, Nebraska between January and August, 1864 by Major George Anderson. It was then attached to the District of Nebraska and operated against Indians in Nebraska and Colorado and guarded the Overland Mail routes. Battle Of White Stone Hill
The Battle of Whitestone Hill was the culmination of the 1863 operations against the Sioux or Dakota people in Dakota Territory. Brigadier General Alfred Sully attacked a village September 3–5, 1863. The Native Americans (also called Plains Indians) in the village included Yanktonai, Santee, and Teton (Lakota) Sioux. The Territory of Dakota was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 2, 1861, until November 2, 1889, when the final extent of the reduced territory was split and admitted to the Union as the states of North and South Dakota.
