2nd Battalion, 4th Marines (2/4th Marines) is an infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps. The battalion, nicknamed the ''Magnificent Bastards'' from the Vietnam War, is based out of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California and is a part of the 4th Marine Regiment and 1st Marine Division. 4th Marine Regiment (United States)
The 4th Marine Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps. Based at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan, it is part of the 3rd Marine Division of the III Marine Expeditionary Force. Operation Napoleon/Saline
Operation Napoleon/Saline was a multi-Battalion operation conducted by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army along the Cửa Việt River south of the DMZ in Quảng Trị Province. The operation ran from 20 January to 9 December 1968. Background The Cửa Việt River served as a vital supply line for the 3rd Marine Division in northern Quảng Trị Province, running from the Cửa Việt Base to the Đông Hà Combat Base which in turn supported the Marine bases along the DMZ. Operation Napoleon The 1st Amphibian Tractor Battalion was moved to the Cửa Việt Base at the mouth of the Cửa Việt River in April 1967 and was responsible for securing the base and its vicinity. William Weise
William Weise (born March 10, 1929) is a retired United States Marine Corps Brigadier general (United States), Brigadier General who served in the Vietnam War. Early life and education Weise was born in south Philadelphia and graduated from Temple University. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1951 in order to use the GI Bill to attend law school. Military career Vietnam War Lt.Col. Weise assumed command of the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines in October 1967 and commanded them during Operation Napoleon/Saline and at the Battle of Dai Do where he was seriously injured. For his actions at Dai Do Weise was awarded the Navy Cross. Post-Vietnam Weise retired from the Marine Corps in 1982 after 31 years of service. In his role as co-chair of the Marine Corps Heritage Center committee he assisted with the funding and creation of the National Museum of the Marine Corps which opened in 2006. Foster LaHue
Foster Carr LaHue (2 September 1917 – 12 February 1996) was a lieutenant general in the United States Marine Corps. He saw combat in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. During the Vietnam War he commanded Task Force X-Ray which was involved in the heaviest fighting at the Battle of Huế. Early life and education LaHue graduated from Corydon High School and subsequently attended DePauw University where he graduated in 1939. Career LaHue completed Officer Candidates School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, in May 1941 and was commissioned as a Marine Second lieutenant. Roswell Winans
Roswell Winans (December 9, 1887 – April 7, 1968) was a highly decorated United States Marine, who as a First Sergeant earned the Medal of Honor during combat in the Dominican Republic. He was later commissioned and served as a company officer with the 5th Marine Regiment in France receiving several citations for bravery in combat. During the interwar period, Winans remained in the Marine Corps and served in Haiti, Nicaragua and China. He rose to the rank of Colonel at the beginning of World War II and served as Chief of Staff, Marine Corps Base San Diego, California for the most of War. Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) was the official name used synonymously by the U.S. government for both the War in Afghanistan (2001–2014) and the larger-scale Global War on Terrorism. Operation Desert Fox
The 1998 bombing of Iraq (code-named Operation Desert Fox) was a major four-day bombing campaign on Iraqi targets from 16 to 19 December 1998, by the United States and the United Kingdom. On 16 December 1998, President of the United States Bill Clinton announced that he had ordered strikes against Iraq.
