List Of Parliamentary Constituencies Of Greece
This is a list of electoral constituencies returning Members of Parliament to the Parliament of Greece. The list reflects the changes which were made to Athens B and Attica in December 2018. Electoral constituencies account for 288 of the 300 parliamentary seats, while the other 12 are elected on a national level through party-list proportional representation. Each constituency, with the exception of those in Attica and Thessaloniki, corresponds to a single prefecture of Greece, even though these were abolished in 2010. The number of seats in each constituency is calculated by first finding the national quota. This is done by dividing the total number of legal residents in the country, as counted at the latest census, by 288 the number of seats in the Parliament elected in constituencies; using the 2011 census, the current quota is 34,385 residents per seat. The actual number of seats per constituency is then calculated in two steps. First by dividing the legal resident pop ...

Union Of The Democratic Centre (Greece)
The Union of the Democratic Centre ( el, Ένωση Δημοκρατικού Κέντρου, abbr. ΕΔΗΚ, ''Enosi Dimokratikou Kentrou'', ''EDIK'') is a social liberal political party in Greece. The party was founded on 5 February 1976, two years after the end of the Greek military junta of 1967–74, asserting itself to be the ideological successor of the pre-1967 Centre Union party. EDIK was the result of the merger of Centre Union – New Forces and the Democratic Centre Union of Ioannis Zidgis. Its party leader at the time was George Mavros who earlier led the Center Union – New Forces; Mavros, though, would join the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) a couple of years later. The party was led by Zidgis in the early 1980s, and has since adopted more social-democratic positions. With the Greek political spectrum shifting to the left, EDIK was increasingly marginalized, with PASOK replacing it as the country's second major party. The party's support collapsed in ...

Greek Legislative Election, 1977
Parliamentary elections were held in Greece on 20 November 1977.Dieter Nohlen & Philip Stöver (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p830 After Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis called for early elections, his New Democracy party suffered a significant loss of power. However, Karamanlis managed to secure an absolute majority in the Parliament. The big surprise was the success of PASOK, whose socialistic rhetoric remained radical. Because of PASOK's success, the Centrists ( Union of the Democratic Centre, ΕDIK, former Center Union - New Forces) led again by Georgios Mavros lost half of their power. As a result, Andreas Papandreou, PASOK's leader, became a prominent figure in Greek politics. The Communists (Communist Party of Greece) and the Nationalists managed to amplify their support. Future Prime Minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras first won a seat in parliament at this election. Results Aftermath In 1979 Greece became European Community's 10th member, despit ...

The Panhellenic Socialist Movement ( el, Πανελλήνιο Σοσιαλιστικό Κίνημα, Panellínio Sosialistikó Kínima, ), known mostly by its acronym PASOK, (; , ) is a social-democratic political party in Greece. Until 2012, it was one of the two major parties in the country, along with New Democracy, its main political rival. Following the collapse of the Greek military dictatorship of 1967–1974, PASOK was founded on 3 September 1974 as a socialist, democratic socialist and left-wing nationalist party. Formerly the largest left-wing party in Greece between 1977 and 2012, PASOK lost much of its popular support as a result of the Greek debt crisis. When the crisis begun, PASOK was the ruling party and negotiated the first Greek bailout package with the European troika which necessitated harsh austerity measures. It caused a significant loss in popularity as a result of the economic crisis, the party was part of two coalition governments from 2011 to 2015, ...

Centre Union – New Forces
Centre Union – New Forces (EK-ND, Greek: ''Ένωσις Κέντρου-Νέες Δυνάμεις'' (Ε.Κ. – Ν.Δ.), ''Enosi Kentrou-Nees Dynameis'') was the continuation of the Centre Union party of George Papandreou after the military junta. It was the merger of a Centre Union fraction led by Georgios Mavros and the Movement of New Political Forces (KNPD). History In the elections of 1974, the party became the second largest of the country, after the conservative New Democracy. It obtained about 20% of the vote and 60 seats in the Hellenic Parliament. On February 5, 1976, the Centre Union – New Forces merged into the Union of the Democratic Centre led by veteran centrist politician George Zigdis. Their program for the elections of 1974 did not differ significantly from that of New Democracy; it included slogans concerning "participatory democracy", "checks imposed on capital (Greek or foreign) by the people", and so on. New Democracy (Greece)
New Democracy (ND; el, Νέα Δημοκρατία, Néa Dimokratía, ) is a liberal-conservative political party in Greece. In contemporary Greek politics, New Democracy has been the main centre-right political party and one of the two major parties along with its historic rival, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). New Democracy and PASOK were created in the wake of the toppling of the military junta in 1974, and ruled Greece alternately for the next four decades. Following the electoral decline of PASOK, New Democracy remained one of the two major parties in Greece, the other being the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA). Having spent four and a half years in opposition to SYRIZA's government, New Democracy regained its majority in the Hellenic Parliament and returned to government under Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the 2019 legislative election. The support of New Democracy comes from a wide electorate base ranging from centrists to conservatives, and nationalists ...

Proportional Representation
Proportional representation (PR) refers to a type of electoral system under which subgroups of an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. The concept applies mainly to geographical (e.g. states, regions) and political divisions (political parties) of the electorate. The essence of such systems is that all votes cast - or almost all votes cast - contribute to the result and are actually used to help elect someone—not just a plurality, or a bare majority—and that the system produces mixed, balanced representation reflecting how votes are cast. "Proportional" electoral systems mean proportional to ''vote share'' and ''not'' proportional to population size. For example, the US House of Representatives has 435 districts which are drawn so roughly equal or "proportional" numbers of people live within each district, yet members of the House are elected in first-past-the-post elections: first-past-the-post is ''not'' proportional by vote share. The ...
