222nd Coastal Division (Italy)
The 222nd Coastal Division ( it, 222ª Divisione Costiera) was an infantry division of the Royal Italian Army during World War II. Royal Italian Army coastal divisions were second line divisions formed with reservists and equipped with second rate materiel. They were often commanded by officers called out of retirement.Jowett p 6 History The division was activated on 15 April 1942 in Naples by uniting the two coastal defense sectors "Salerno" and " Sapri". From April to December 1942 the division was assigned to XXX Army Corps, which then moved to Tunisia and was destroyed in the Tunisian Campaign. The Kingdom of Italy ( it, Regno d'Italia) was a state that existed from 1861, when Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia was proclaimed King of Italy, until 1946, when civil discontent led to an institutional referendum to abandon the monarchy and form the modern Italian Republic. The state resulted from a decades-long process, the ''Risorgimento'', of consolidating the different states of the Italian Peninsula into a single state. That process was influenced by the Savoy-led Kingdom of Sardinia, which can be considered Italy's legal predecessor state. XIX Army Corps (Italy)
The XIX Army Corps ( it, XIX Corpo d'Armata) was a corps of the Royal Italian Army between 1942 and 1943. History The XIX Army Corps was created on 3 March 1942 in Bolzano. On 1 May 1943 it was transferred to Campania where it was tasked with coastal defense. When the Armistice of Cassibile was signed, the Corps commander Riccardo Pentimalli took no action to prevent the German takeover of the area under his control, and even fled in civilian clothes together with Ettore Deltetto, leaving his subordinates without orders. As a consequence, the XIX Corps was disarmed by the Germans and dissolved on 11 September 1943 at Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Operation Achse (german: Fall Achse, lit=Case Axis), originally called Operation Alaric (), was the codename for the German operation to forcibly disarm the Italian armed forces after Italy's armistice with the Allies on 3 September 1943. Several German divisions had entered Italy after the fall of Benito Mussolini in July 1943, while Italy was officially still an ally of Germany, despite the protests of the new Italian government under Pietro Badoglio. The armistice was made public on 8 September. German forces moved rapidly to take over the Italian zones of occupation in the Balkans and southern France, and to disarm Italian forces in Italy. Ferrante Vincenzo Gonzaga, Marquess of Vescovato, Lombardy, Vescovato (Turin, 6 March 1889 – Eboli, 8 September 1943) was an Italian general during World War II. Armistice Of Cassibile
The Armistice of Cassibile was an armistice signed on 3 September 1943 and made public on 8 September between the Kingdom of Italy and the Allies during World War II. It was signed by Major General Walter Bedell Smith for the Allies and Brigade General Giuseppe Castellano for Italy at a conference of generals from both sides in an Allied military camp at Cassibile, in Sicily, which had recently been occupied by the Allies. The armistice was approved by both the Italian King Victor Emmanuel III and Marshal Badoglio, the Prime Minister of Italy at the time. The Gulf of Naples (), also called the Bay of Naples, is a roughly 15-kilometer-wide (9.3 mi) gulf located along the south-western coast of Italy (province of Naples, Campania region). The Gulf of Salerno (Italian: ''Golfo di Salerno'') is a gulf of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the coast of the province of Salerno in south-western Italy. The northern part of this coast is the Costiera Amalfitana, which ends at Punta di Campanella and includes towns like Amalfi, Maiori, Positano and the city of Salerno itself.
