20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards
The 20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards was held on Thursday, November 14, 2019, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and was broadcast on Univision. The telecast marked the 20th anniversary of the Latin Grammy Awards and honored outstanding achievements in Latin music released from June 1, 2018, to May 31, 2019. Juanes was honored as the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year on the night prior to the telecast. Thalía was honored with the ''President's Merit Award'' for her achievements and outstanding contribution in Latin music. Nominations were announced on September 24, 2019. Spanish singer-songwriter Alejandro Sanz led nominations with eight. Rosalía and Alejandro Sanz had the most wins with three awards each. The MGM Grand Garden Arena (originally known as the MGM Grand Garden Special Events Center) is a 17,000-seat multi-purpose arena located within the MGM Grand Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip. Latin Recording Academy Person Of The Year
The Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year is an award presented annually by the Latin Recording Academy, the same organization that distributes the Latin Grammy Awards, to commend musicians of Ibero-American heritage for their "artistic achievements in the Latin music industry as well as their humanitarian efforts". Award recipients are honored during "Latin Grammy Week", a string of galas just prior to the annual Latin Grammy Awards ceremony. The award was first presented to Cuban American musician and producer Emilio Estefan in 2000 for increasing public awareness of Latin music. Luis Alberto Cuevas Olmedo (born September 12, 1967), better known as Beto Cuevas (), is a Chilean-Canadian singer, song writer, plastic artist, painter, and actor. Calibre 50 () is a Regional Mexican band founded in the city of Mazatlán, Sinaloa in 2010. Their style is Norteño-Banda, a hybrid of Norteño, which uses an electric bass or tololoche for the low notes and replaces it with a sousaphone (tuba), which is typically used in Banda for the bass notes. History Before establishing Calibre 50, Edén Muñoz had been the accordionist and vocalist in the Norteño-banda group, Colmillo Norteño. With Muñoz, the group scored the hit songs "Sueño guajiro" and "Hotel El Cid" in 2009, among others. Reik is a Mexican pop rock band from Mexicali, Baja California, formed in 2003 by Jesús Alberto Navarro Rosas (lead vocals), Julio Ramírez Eguía (guitar, background vocals), and Gilberto Marín Espinoza (guitar). The group's first five albums have been classified as Latin pop, but the group has since transitioned to a more urban-influenced sound since 2015.
