20 (Kate Rusby Album)
''20'' is a studio album by English folk musician Kate Rusby, released on 22 October 2012 on Pure Records. Produced by Rusby and her husband Damien O'Kane, the album celebrates Rusby's twentieth year as a recording artist, and features re-recordings of previously released tracks each of which features guest vocals from the likes of Nic Jones, Paul Weller, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eddi Reader, Sarah Jarosz and others. A similar album, '' 10'', was released in 2002. Upon its release, the album entered the UK Album Chart at #22. Background and recording Regarding the selection of songs included, Kate Rusby noted, "It was difficult to boil down the song selection to just twenty songs, because songs are like children, aren't they – you love them all equally! Dick Gaughan
Richard Peter Gaughan (born 17 May 1948) is a Scottish musician, singer and songwriter, particularly of folk and social protest songs. He is regarded as one of Scotland's leading singer-songwriters. Early years Gaughan was born in Glasgow's Royal Maternity Hospital while his father was working in Glasgow as an engine driver. He spent the first year-and-a-half of his life in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, after which the whole family moved to Leith, a port on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The eldest of three children, Gaughan grew up surrounded by the music of both Scotland and Ireland. His mother, a Highland Scot from Lochaber who spoke Gaelic, had as a child won a silver medal for singing at a Gaelic Mòd. His father, a native of Leith, played guitar. Declan O'Rourke
Declan O'Rourke (born April 26, 1976) is a singer-songwriter from Dublin, Ireland. Career Early career to 2010 At the age of 13, when living in Australia with his family, O'Rourke was given his first guitar by a priest in Kyabram who recognised his potential and love for music, hence the title of his debut album ''Since Kyabram'', released in October 2004. The album's launch took place over three sold-out nights in Whelan's of Wexford St, Dublin and was broadcast live on national radio. Grimethorpe Colliery Band
The Grimethorpe Colliery Band is a brass band, based in Grimethorpe, South Yorkshire, England. It was formed in 1917, as a leisure activity for the workers at the colliery, by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band. Along with the Black Dyke Mills Band, the band became the first to perform at the Proms. Grimethorpe Band achieved worldwide fame after appearing in the film ''Brassed Off''. Stephen Fretwell
Stephen Fretwell (born 10 November 1981) is an English singer-songwriter. Biography Fretwell attended St. Augustine Webster Primary School in Scunthorpe and St. Bede's Catholic School in Ashby before furthering his study at John Leggott College. It was in his teenage years that he started his first band, named Label. After moving to Manchester to attend Salford University (to study English, but dropping out within a few days), he started to earn notices in ''NME'' and '' Q''. During this period songs such as "Emily" and "What’s That You Say Little Girl?" were first written. Fretwell decided to stay in Manchester permanently, later releasing ''8 Songs'' which he released on Northern Ambition, a label owned by a friend. Dave Burland
Dave Burland (born 12 July 1941, Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire, England) is an English folk singer and guitarist. A former policeman, he has been performing in English folk clubs since 1968 and has been described by ''The Guardian'' as having a "uniquely relaxed singing style". In 1976 Burland joined the folk group Hedgehog Pie, which disbanded in 1978. He re-formed the group in 2010, with Mick Doonan and Jed Grimes. He provided additional vocals on the track "Wild Goose" on Kate Rusby's award-winning 1999 album '' Sleepless''. Paul Brady
Paul Joseph Brady (born 19 May 1947) is an Irish singer-songwriter and musician from Strabane, Northern Ireland. His work straddles folk and pop. He was interested in a wide variety of music from an early age. Initially popular for playing Irish traditional music in a duo with Andy Irvine and later with Tommy Peoples and Matt Molloy, he later turned to a more rock-inspired electric style with poignant political lyrics. Seven Drunken Nights
"Seven Drunken Nights" is a humorous Irish Folk music, folk song most famously performed by The Dubliners. It is a variation of the Scottish folk song "Our Goodman" (Francis James Child, Child 274, Roud Folk Song Index, Roud 114). It tells the story of a gullible drunkard returning night after night to see new evidence of his wife's lover, only to be taken in by increasingly implausible explanations. History "Our Goodman" was Music of Scotland#Folk song collecting, collected in Scotland in the 1770s. Another version was found in a London Broadside (music), broadside of the 1760s entitled "The Merry Cuckold and the Kind Wife". The broadside was translated into German, and spread into Hungary and Scandinavia. Unusually for such a popular and widespread song, it appears in only a few nineteenth century broadsides. Noam Pikelny
Noam Pikelny (born February 27, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American banjoist. He is a member of the group Punch Brothers and was previously in Leftover Salmon as well as the John Cowan Band. Pikelny is a nine-time Grammy Award nominee, winning once in 2019 for Best Folk Album. History Pikelny started playing banjo when he was 8 years old. Sara Watkins
Sara Ullrika Watkins (born June 8, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter and fiddler. Watkins debuted in 1989 as the fiddler of Nickel Creek, the progressive bluegrass group she formed with her brother Sean and mandolinist Chris Thile. In addition to singing and fiddling, Watkins also plays the ukulele and the guitar, and also played percussion while touring with the Decemberists.
