2024 Super League Season
Super League XXIX, known as the 2024 Betfred Super League for sponsorship reasons, is the 29th season of the Super League and 130th season of rugby league in Great Britain. Wigan Warriors are the defending champions, having beaten Catalans Dragons in the Grand Final, to win their sixth Super League title. London Broncos were promoted from the Championship, having beaten Toulouse Olympique in the Championship Grand Final. Structure changes At the end of the 2023 season, IMG and the Rugby Football League (RFL) released initial gradings, indicating which league clubs would likely be playing in from the 2025 system. This transition to the new gradings-based system means there will be no automatic relegation as a result of finishing 12th from 2024. Super League
The Super League (officially known as the Betfred Super League due to sponsorship from Betfred and legally known as Super League Europe), is the top-level of the British rugby league system. At present the league consists of twelve teams, of which eleven are from Northern England, reflecting the sport's geographic heartland within the UK, and one from southern France. The Super League began in 1996, replacing the existing Rugby Football League Championship First Division, First Division and, significantly, switching from a traditional winter season to a summer season. Each team plays 27 games between February and September: 11 home games, 11 away games, Magic Weekend and an additional 4 'loop fixtures' decided by league positions. Hull Kingston Rovers are a professional rugby league club based in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, that competes in the Super League, the top tier of British rugby league. Huddersfield Giants are an English professional rugby league club from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the birthplace of rugby league, who play in the Super League competition. Wakefield Trinity is a professional rugby league club in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, that plays in the Super League. Super League Show
The ''Super League Show'' is the BBC's principal rugby league programme, shown on BBC One in the North of England on Monday evenings, repeated nationally on BBC Two on Tuesday lunchtimes and also on BBC iPlayer. The programme, produced by PDI Media at BBC Yorkshire's studios in Leeds, is presented by Tanya Arnold with match commentary from Dave Woods and Andy Giddings and analysis from a variety of studio guests from Super League. IMG Grading For The British Rugby Football League
IMG Grading for the Rugby Football League is a set of proposals set out in 2022 by the British Rugby Football League's new strategic partner IMG, in which all clubs playing in the professional levels of the British rugby league system will be graded, with their rank determining which division each club will play. The proposals were accepted by a majority vote of British rugby league stakeholders in 2023 with implementation starting in the 2024 season. The grading in the new system will see: *Grade A clubs will be guaranteed a place in Super League, and will be exempt relegation. *Grade B clubs will be eligible to participate in Super League, and the highest ranked Grade B clubs will occupy the remaining slots. *Grade C clubs will be ineligible for Super League thus can only compete in the Championship and League One. The Rugby Football League is the governing body for professional rugby league in England, and until 1995 for the whole British Isles.
