The 2023–24 season is the 32nd season of competitive football in Wales. The domestic season began on 21 July 2023, with the Cymru Premier League Cup first round matches alongside the first round of matches of the Cymru North and Cymru South which began on 28 July 2023. The first round of matches in the Cymru Premier were played on 11 August 2023. Flag Of Wales
The flag of Wales ( cy, Baner Cymru or , meaning 'the red dragon') consists of a red dragon passant on a green and white field. As with many heraldic charges, the exact representation of the dragon is not standardised and many renderings exist. It is not represented in the Union Flag. The red dragon of Wales personifies the fearlessness of the Welsh nation. Vortigern () King of the Celtic Britons from Powys is interrupted whilst attempting to build a fort at Dinas Emrys. He is told by Merlin/Ambrosius () to dig up two dragons beneath the castle. He discovers a red dragon representing the Celtic Britons (now Welsh) and a white dragon representing Anglo-Saxons (now English). Merlin/Ambrosius prophecises that the Celtic Britons will reclaim the island and push the Anglo-Saxons back to the sea. FAW Trophy
The FAW Welsh Trophy is a knock-out football competition contested annually by teams from Wales and the borders. The Football Association of Wales is the organising body of this competition, which has been run every year since its inception in 1890–91 (except during the two World Wars) for clubs competing in the lower echelons of the Welsh football league system. It was known as the Welsh Junior Cup until 1902, when it became the Welsh Amateur Cup, a title it held until 1974, when it was renamed the FAW Intermediate Cup. The competition took its current title in 1993. Eligible clubs In order to play in this competition a club must compete at Level 3 or below of the Welsh football league system. Teams playing in and below Welsh Football League Division 2, the Mid Wales Football League, the Welsh Alliance League and Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) are eligible to enter. UEFA Coefficients
In European football, the UEFA coefficients are statistics based in weighted arithmetic means used for ranking and seeding teams in club and international competitions. Introduced in 1979 for men's football tournaments, and after applied in women's football and futsal, the coefficients are calculated by UEFA, who administer football within Europe, as well as Armenia, Israel and the Asian parts of some transcontinental countries. Gwent County League
The Gwent County League (known as the Autocentres Gwent County FA League for sponsorship reasons) is a football league in South Wales, consisting of 3 divisions, named the Premier Division, Division One and Division Two. The Premier Division is a feeder to the Ardal Leagues, and therefore sits at tier 4 of the Welsh football pyramid. South Wales Alliance League
The South Wales Alliance League is a football league structure in South Wales, currently known for sponsorship reasons as ''The Highadmit Projects South Wales Alliance League''. The top tier of the league, the Premier Division is at the fourth tier of the Welsh Football Pyramid and offers promotion opportunities to the tier 3 Football Association of Wales administered Ardal Leagues. The league is run by the South Wales Football Association. The league was formed in 2015 by a merger of the South Wales Senior League and the South Wales Amateur League. In April 2022, the league, after discussions with the South Wales Football Association, announced planned changes to the league structure from the 2023–24 season. West Wales Premier League
The West Wales Premier League (known for sponsorship reasons as ''The Macron West Wales Premier League'') is a football league in Wales, at tier 4 of the Welsh Football Pyramid in South West Wales under the control of the West Wales Football Association. The league consists of teams having their grounds and headquarters West of a line drawn from Briton Ferry, Neath, northwards to Glynneath, and then again northwards to the boundary line of the South Wales Football Association. It offers promotion opportunities to the Ardal Leagues, at tier 3 of the Football Association of Wales pyramid. Its inaugural season was due run in 2020–21 but was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Central Wales Football League ''(formerly the Mid Wales Football League)'' is a football league in Wales at tier 4 of the Welsh Football pyramid, run by the Central Wales Football Association. The league consists of two regionally based divisions - a North Division and a South Division. The league offers a promotion route to the Football Association of Wales administered Tier 3 Ardal Leagues. The North Wales Coast West Football League is a football league in Wales, at tiers 4 and 5 of the Welsh football league system in North Wales, founded in 2020. The league is under the control of the North Wales Coast Football Association. The league replaced the former Gwynedd League and Anglesey Leagues, and covers the North West of Wales. North East Wales Football League
The North East Wales Football League represents the North East Wales area at the fourth and fifth tiers of the Welsh football league system. It was established in 2020 as a successor to the North East Wales League following a reorganisation of the Welsh football pyramid. The 2023–24 Ardal SW season (also known as the 2023–24 Floodlighting and Electrical Services Ardal SW season for sponsorship reasons) was the third season of the new third-tier southern region football in Welsh football pyramid, part of the Ardal Leagues. The winners ( Penrhiwceiber Rangers) were promoted to the 2024–25 Cymru South. The runners-up (Cefn Cribwr) qualified for the Ardal Southern play-off, losing and remaining in the league. The bottom three teams (Mumbles Rangers, Penydarren BGC, and Port Talbot Town) were relegated to Tier 4. The 2023–24 Ardal SE season (also known as the 2023–24 Floodlighting and Electrical Services Ardal SE season for sponsorship reasons) was the third season of the new third-tier southern region football in Welsh football pyramid, part of the Ardal Leagues. The winners ( Trethomas Bluebirds) were promoted to the 2024–25 Cymru South. The runners-up (Newport City) were also promoted after winning the Ardal Southern play-off.
