2023–24 WHL Season
The 2023–24 WHL season was the 58th season of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The regular season started on September 22, 2023, and ended on March 24, 2024, with the playoffs beginning on March 28 and ending on May 15. The Moose Jaw Warriors won their first Ed Chynoweth Cup in franchise history, defeating the Portland Winterhawks in the championship series, and earned a spot in the 2024 Memorial Cup. The Memorial Cup tournament was hosted by the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit at Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan. Prior to the season, the 2022–23 finalist Winnipeg Ice were sold and relocated to Wenatchee, Washington, and became the Wenatchee Wild, making 2023–24 their inaugural season. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Wenatchee Wild
The Wenatchee Wild is a Junior A ice hockey team in the British Columbia Hockey League. The team plays its home games at the 4,300-seat Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee, Washington. Initially, the team was part of the North American Hockey League, joining as an expansion club for the 2008–09 season, and in that time they were well known for their rivalry with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. The Winnipeg Ice (officially stylized as ICE) are a Canadian major junior ice hockey team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The team began competing in the Western Hockey League (WHL) in the 2019–20 WHL season, and plays home games at the Wayne Fleming Arena (Max Bell Centre) while construction on a new arena near Oak Bluff, Manitoba is completed. Saginaw () is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Saginaw County. The city of Saginaw and Saginaw County are both in the area known as Mid-Michigan. Dow Event Center
The Dow Event Center (formerly known as Saginaw County Event Center and Saginaw Civic Center) is an indoor arena located in Saginaw, Michigan. The center consists of several parts: The Atrium, The Garden Room, The Theater, The Red Room, Huntington Event Park, and The Arena. It currently houses the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit. The facility has housed a number of hockey teams in the past, such as the Saginaw Lumber Kings and both the IHL and UHL incarnations of the Saginaw Gears. 2024 Memorial Cup
The 2024 Memorial Cup (branded as the 2024 Memorial Cup presented by Dow for sponsorship reasons) was a four-team round-robin format ice hockey tournament held at Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan, United States. It was the 104th Memorial Cup championship which determined the champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The tournament was hosted by the Saginaw Spirit, who won the right to host the tournament in March 2023. This was the first time that the Memorial Cup was held in Michigan, and it was the first time in the United States since 1998, which was held in Spokane, Washington. Ed Chynoweth Cup
The Ed Chynoweth Cup is an ice hockey club championship trophy awarded to the playoff champion of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Originally called the President's Cup when the league was founded in 1966, the trophy was renamed in 2007 to honour Ed Chynoweth's long service to junior hockey in Canada. The WHL champion earns a berth into the Memorial Cup tournament, Canada's major junior championship. The Kamloops Blazers have won the most championships with six, followed by the Medicine Hat Tigers with five.
