Federation
A federation (also known as a federal state) is a political entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing provinces, states, or other regions under a central federal government (federalism). In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states, as well as the division of power between them and the central government, is typically constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision, neither by the component states nor the federal political body. Following the 2011 Tunisian revolution, elections in Tunisia for the president and the unicameral Assembly of the Representatives of the People are scheduled to be held every five years. The assembly can be dissolved before finishing a full term. 2023 Nigerian Presidential Election
The 2023 Nigerian presidential election will be held on 25 February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President. Incumbent APC President Muhammadu Buhari is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterwards on 11 March. The winners of the election will be inaugurated on 29 May 2023, the former date of Democracy Day. Party primaries were scheduled for between 4 April and 9 June 2022 with the Peoples Democratic Party nominating former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on 28 May while the All Progressives Congress' primary will hold from 6 to 8 May. 2023 Djiboutian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Djibouti on 24 February 2023 to elect the 65 members of the National Assembly. Background Since his election as President in 1999 Ismaïl Omar Guelleh has ruled Djibouti with almost unchecked power and has become increasing authoritarian. In all of his presidential re-election campaigns he has never gotten below 80 percent of the vote, which the opposition have decried as fraudulent. National-level elections in Djibouti are held for the President and the unicameral National Assembly (''Assemblée Nationale''). Djibouti is a one party dominant state with the People's Rally for Progress (RPP) in power. Opposition parties are allowed since the 1992 referendum, but have been represented in parliament only since the 2013 elections. Freedom House considers the recent elections in Djibouti to be "not free". Djibouti also uses the Red Sea as a bases for all of its economic and political decisions for current day and in the future. Current President, Ismail Omar Guelleh has been in office since May 8, 1999. 2023 Monegasque General Election
General elections were held in Monaco on 5 February 2023. The result was a landslide victory for the governing Monegasque National Union led by Brigitte Boccone-Pagès, which won all 24 seats on the National Council. The new council was sworn in on 16 February. Background The previous elections in February 2018 saw Stéphane Valeri's Priorité Monaco list win 21 of the 24 seats with more than 57% of the vote, with the party taking all seats filled by majority vote and five of the eight filled by proportional representation. Elections In Monaco
Monaco elects on the national level a legislature (parliament). The National Council (''Conseil National'') has 24 members, elected for a five-year term, 16 elected by a winner-take-all plurality system, and the other 8 by proportional representation. Each voter may cast a ballot with up to 16 candidates' names. First, the 16 individuals with the most votes are elected. Then, votes are counted by party groups to fill the remaining 8 seats. E.g., if a party polled 51% of the votes it would probably win 20 out of 24 seats (all 16 of the winner-take-all seats and then 4 of the 8 proportional seats). 2023 Ecuadorian Constitutional Referendum
A constitutional referendum was held in Ecuador on 5 February 2023, alongside local elections. The binding consultation was called on 29 November 2022 by President Guillermo Lasso. Voters were asked to approve or reject a total of eight questions surrounding changes to the Constitution of Ecuador. Soon after the referendum, '' Reuters'', ''Al Jazeera'', '' CNN en Español'' and the '' Financial Times'' projected the failure of all eight of its proposals, with president Guillermo Lasso eventually conceding defeat. Turnout for the referendum was estimated at 80.74%.
