2023 World Para Swimming Championships
The 2023 World Para Swimming Championships was the 12th edition of the World Para Swimming Championships, an international swimming competition for swimmers with disabilities. It was held in Manchester, Great Britain from 31 July to 6 August 2023. This was the third time that Great Britain have hosted the World Para Swimming Championships with Glasgow hosting in 2015 and London hosting in 2019. The World Championships serves as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Paralympics where two top swimmers in each individual medal event final will be automatically selected to compete at the Paralympics. As a swimmer can only hold one quota, which makes them eligible for all events in their classification for which they have a qualifying time, unrequired quotas are returned to be distributed later. Cecília Kethlen Jerônimo de Araújo (born 13 October 1998) is a Brazilian Paralympic swimmer. She represents Brazil in elite international competitions. Maria Carolina Gomes Santiago (born 2 August 1985), also known as Carol Santiago, is a Brazilian Paralympic swimmer who competes in international level events. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics and won five medals, including three gold medals. Life Santiago has a congenital eye condition called morning glory syndrome which is a defect in her optic nerve, she is partially sighted in her left eye but doesn't have peripheral vision in her right eye. She began swimming aged four and took part in able-bodied swimming competitions and open water swimming aged twelve. By the age of seventeen, she was completely blind for eight months due to accumulation of water in her retina and stopped swimming. Liesette Bruinsma (born 9 September 2000) is a Dutch Paralympic swimmer. She competes in S11 classification events for athletes with visual impairments. She is the 2016 double Paralympic champion within her classification. She competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, in Women's 400 metre freestyle S11, and Women's 100 metre freestyle S11, winning silver medals. Swimming career Bruinsma first competed for the Netherlands at Glasgow in 2014. Aurélie Rivard (born May 14, 1996) is a Canadian swimmer. (search for "Rivard") After winning three Paralympics gold medals, claiming a silver Paralympic medal and setting two World Records and a Paralympic Record at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the Paraswimmer was named Canada's flag-bearer for the closing ceremony.
