By-election
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, a bye-election in Ireland, a bypoll in India, or a Zimni election (Urdu: ضمنی انتخاب, supplementary election) in Pakistan, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent dying or resigning, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, election or appointment to a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. In some cases a vacancy may be filled without a by-election or the office may be left vacant. 2023 West Lancashire By-election
A by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of West Lancashire is due on 9 February 2023, following the resignation of incumbent member of Parliament Rosie Cooper. She announced her resignation in order to take up the job as Chair of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. Background West Lancashire covers the southern part of the borough of the same name, with the major settlements being the towns of Burscough, Ormskirk and Skelmersdale. The rest of the population live in the surrounding villages. The seat is considered part of the red wall, and voted 55% in favour of Brexit in the 2016 EU membership referendum. The constituency was created as the successor to Ormskirk for the 1983 United Kingdom general election and was held by Conservative Ken Hind until 1992 when it was taken for Labour by Colin Pickthall. 3 (three) is a number, numeral and digit. It is the natural number following 2 and preceding 4, and is the smallest odd prime number and the only prime preceding a square number. It has religious or cultural significance in many societies. 2023 Northern Ireland Local Elections
Local elections are scheduled to be held in Northern Ireland on 18 May 2023, 2 weeks after other elections across the United Kingdom. The last local elections in Northern Ireland were held in 2019. The elections were delayed by 2 weeks to avoid overlapping with the coronation of King Charles III. Electoral system Northern Ireland uses the single transferable vote (STV) electoral system to elect members of local councils and members of the Northern Ireland Assembly. Voters rank candidates in order of preference by marking 1, 2, 3, ''etc.'' to the names of candidates on a ballot paper and can rank as many or as few candidates as they like or just vote for one candidate. These were the third elections held on new boundaries, introduced in 2014. 2023 Uxbridge And South Ruislip By-election
A List of United Kingdom by-elections (2010–present), by-election for the Constituencies of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of was held on 20 July 2023, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson as its Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), member of Parliament (MP) on 12 June. The Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party's candidate, Steve Tuckwell, held the seat with a reduced majority of 495 votes. The result was considered an upset, as Labour Party (UK), Labour had targeted the seat heavily; a large backlash against Johnson was expected in the constituency in the wake of the Partygate affair. 2023 Somerton And Frome By-election
A by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome took place on 20 July 2023, following the resignation of the incumbent MP David Warburton on 17 June. It was the first by-election in Somerset since the 1970 Bridgwater by-election. The seat was won by the Liberal Democrat candidate Sarah Dyke. Background Somerton and Frome is a rural constituency in Somerset in the South West of England. The constituency includes the market towns of Somerton, Frome, Castle Cary, Langport, Wincanton, Templecombe, Bruton and Martock. 2023 Rutherglen And Hamilton West By-election
A by-election took place in the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Rutherglen and Hamilton West on 5 October 2023, following the recall of incumbent MP Margaret Ferrier. Ferrier, elected for the Scottish National Party, was suspended from the House of Commons in June 2023 for 30 days for breaching COVID-19 regulations in 2020. In accordance with the Recall of MPs Act 2015, this suspension triggered a recall petition in the constituency. This petition was successful, resulting in her removal from the seat and thus triggering a by-election. The by-election was won by Michael Shanks of Labour with 58.6% of the vote, while Katy Loudon of the SNP finished in second place with 27.6% of the vote. Twelve other candidates stood in the by-election, although none of them exceeded the 5% of the vote required to retain their deposits. Turnout was recorded at 37.19%. 2023 Gibraltar General Election
General elections were held in Gibraltar on 12 October 2023 to elect all 17 members of the fifth Gibraltar Parliament. This was the first election in Gibraltar's history to use an electronic voting count system. The GSLP–Liberal Alliance secured a fourth term in office, though it saw its majority reduced to one seat, whilst the GSD became the sole opposition party, gaining two seats (one from the Alliance and one from the non-contesting party, Together Gibraltar). 2023 Mid Bedfordshire By-election
A by-election took place on 19 October 2023 in the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Mid Bedfordshire. It took place on the same day as the 2023 Tamworth by-election. The seat became vacant following the resignation of the sitting Conservative MP, Nadine Dorries. On 9 June 2023, Dorries announced that she was standing down from the seat "with immediate effect". She then delayed her formal process of resignation until 29 August. The election was won by Alistair Strathern of the Labour Party, the first Labour victory in the seat since its creation in 1918. The 2023 Tamworth by-election is a by-election to be held on 19 October 2023 for the UK parliamentary constituency of Tamworth, due to the resignation of Chris Pincher MP. Pincher announced his resignation following a sexual misconduct scandal, and his recommended suspension from the House of Commons for eight weeks. Background Chris Pincher resignation Chris Pincher, a former Deputy Chief Whip, was involved in a controversy following allegations of sexual misconduct. Pincher resigned as Deputy Chief Whip on 30 June 2022, and was suspended as a Conservative MP following allegations that he had sexually assaulted two men. Further allegations were made in July, which pre-dated his appointment by Boris Johnson, who originally denied knowledge of the allegations.
