2023 Singaporean Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Singapore on 1 September 2023, the sixth public presidential elections but only the third to be contested by more than one candidate. Incumbent president Halimah Yacob, who had been Uncontested election, elected unopposed in 2017 Singaporean presidential election, 2017, did not seek re-election. Three candidates ran for the Non-partisan democracy, non-partisan position: Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Ng Kok Song, and Tan Kin Lian, who were all Independent politician, independents or had resigned from any political parties that they had previously been members of. They were all issued the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), and a community certificate, to be able to contest in the elections, per the eligibility requirements. Tharman Shanmugaratnam
Tharman Shanmugaratnam (Tamil: தர்மன் சண்முகரத்தினம்; born 25 February 1957) is a Singaporean politician and economist who has been serving as Senior Minister of Singapore since 2019 and has also been Coordinating Minister for Social Policies since 2015 and also chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore since 2011. A member of the governing People's Action Party, he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Taman Jurong division of Jurong GRC since 2001. Chee Soon Juan
Chee Soon Juan is a Singaporean politician, activist and former lecturer who has been serving as Secretary-General of the Singapore Democratic Party since 1993. Prior to entering politics in 1992, upon Chiam See Tong's invitation to join the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Chee was a lecturer at the National University of Singapore. Chee subsequently succeeded Chiam as the party's secretary-general after Chiam, whom Chee and the rest of the party's leadership have had a number of disagreements, left the party. Tan Cheng Bock
Adrian Tan Cheng Bock ( zh, s=陈清木, p=Chén Qīngmù; born 26 April 1940) is a Singaporean politician and medical practitioner. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayer Rajah SMC between 1980 and 2001. He served as Secretary-General of Progress Singapore Party (PSP) between 2019 to 2021 and served as Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Chairman since 2021. Early life Tan was born on 26 April 1940 in Singapore. He came from a Hokkien-speaking family. Tan attended Radin Mas Primary School and Raffles Institution (RI). At RI, he was once the classmate of the future Prime Minister and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Lim Tean
Lim Tean (; born 17 November 1964) is a Singaporean lawyer and politician. He is the founder of the political party Peoples Voice. He previously served as secretary-general of the National Solidarity Party from 30 August 2015 to 18 May 2017. Early life Lim was born in 1964 as the eldest son of Lim Chin Teong, a senior civil servant who served as Chief Executive Director of the People's Association (PA) between the late 1970s and early 1980s. His mother, Aw Eng Lian, was a Chinese-language teacher at Zhonghua Girls School for over 40 years. Both of Lim's parents graduated from Nanyang University, a defunct university in Singapore. Tan Jee Say (; born 12 February 1954) is a Singaporean politician and former civil servant who stood for the 2011 presidential election. He also founded the defunct political party, Singaporeans First. Education Tan graduated from University College, Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics (PPE) under the Government Overseas Merit Scholarship. Career Tan had worked in the Civil Service for 11 years, including six years in the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) from 1979 to 1985, before leaving as Deputy Director for Economic and Manpower Planning. The Singapore Democratic Party (abbreviation: SDP) is a politcal party in Singapore. The party was founded on 6 August 1980 by Chiam See Tong. During the 1991 general election, Ling How Doong and Cheo Chai Chen won Bukit Gombak SMC and Nee Soon SMC respectively, giving the party a total of three seats in Parliament. When Chiam fell out with the party's Central Executive Committee in 1993 and subsequently left the party in 1996 for the splinter Singapore People's Party (SPP), the party became destabilised. Chiam was succeeded by Chee Soon Juan, who has remained as Secretary-General ever since.
