2023 Regina Walsh Acres Provincial By-election
A by-election was held in the provincial riding of Regina Walsh Acres in Saskatchewan on August 10, 2023 to elect a new member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan following the death of Saskatchewan Party MLA Derek Meyers. It was held the same day as two others in the province; Lumsden-Morse and Regina Coronation Park. Regina Walsh Acres is a provinces and territories of Canada, provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Canada. Originally created for the 1967 Saskatchewan general election, 16th Saskatchewan general election in 1967 from parts of Regina North and Regina West (provincial electoral district), Regina West, this constituency has changed boundaries many times. This district currently includes the Regina neighbourhoods of Normanview, Regent Park, Sherwood-McCarthy, McCarthy Park, and Walsh Acres. Saskatchewan New Democratic Party
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. History Precursors The origins of the party began as early as 1902. In that year a group of farmers created the Territorial Grain Growers' Association. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. The name was changed to the Saskatchewan Grain Growers' Association (SGGA) when Saskatchewan became a province in 1905. The list of Saskatchewan by-elections includes every by-election held in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. By-elections occur whenever there is a vacancy in the Legislative Assembly, although an imminent general election may allow the vacancy to remain until the dissolution of parliament. Causes A by-election occurs whenever there is a vacancy in the Saskatchewan legislature. Vacancies can occur for the following reasons: * Death of a member. * Resignation of a member. * Voided results * Expulsion from the legislature. * Ineligibility to sit. * Appointment to the cabinet. Sandra Morin
Sandra Morin is a Canadian provincial politician. She served as the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan for the constituency of Regina Walsh Acres from 2003 until 2011, and as Minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation in the government of Lorne Calvert from May 2007 until the government's defeat in the 2007 Saskatchewan general election. Morin herself lost her seat in the 2011 Saskatchewan general election to Saskatchewan Party candidate Warren Steinley. She chose not to run in the 2016 Saskatchewan general election because of her civilian position with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Morin was nominated to run in Regina Walsh Acres in the 2020 Saskatchewan general election but her nomination was overturned when party leader Ryan Meili declined to endorse her candidacy in August 2020 due to findings of a "confidential vetting process". The Saskatchewan Green Party is a political party in Saskatchewan, Canada. The Green Party was founded in 1998 as the "New Green Alliance" ''(NGA)'' by environmental and social justice activists dismayed with the premiership of the Saskatchewan NDP's Roy Romanow.
