2023 Phoenix Mercury Season
The 2023 Phoenix Mercury season was the 26th season for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association, and the second season under head coach Vanessa Nygaard. In October 2022, Skylar Diggins-Smith announced on Instagram that she was pregnant with her second child. On December 8, 2022, Brittney Griner was successfully returned to the United States of America after the Brittney Griner–Viktor Bout prisoner exchange went through without issues. By extension, Griner returned to action with the Mercury and the WNBA after missing the entire 2022 WNBA season due to her being arrested and imprisoned in Russia (a place she had previously played in for years during the WNBA's offseasons by playing with the UMMC Ekaterinburg without prior issue) for medical cannabis, which is considered an illegal substance there. WNBA Western Conference
The Western Conference of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is made up of six teams. From the league's second season in 1998 through 2015, the WNBA operated separate playoff brackets for its Eastern and Western Conferences. Each conference's playoff was divided into two playoff rounds, the Conference Semi-Finals and the Conference Finals, with the Conference Finals winners receiving Conference Championships and advancing to the WNBA Finals to determine the WNBA champion. In the final years of this playoff scheme, all in-conference playoff series were best-of-three. Justin R. Ishbia (born 1976/1977) is an American billionaire businessman and private equity investor, being a founding partner of Shore Capital Partners. He is a part majority owner of the Phoenix Suns of the NBA and Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA along with his brother Mat Ishbia. He is also a minority owner of Major League Soccer team Nashville SC. Megan Gustafson
Megan Gustafson (born December 13, 1996) is an American basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Gustafson was drafted in the second round (17th overall) by the Dallas Wings in the 2019 WNBA draft, but was released before the start of the season. On June 10, 2019, she was signed again by the team that had previously cut her. Gustafson completed her college career with the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2019. As a senior, she scored 1000 points that year and won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top female basketball player. On March 15, 2019, ESPN named Gustafson the national player of the year. Monica Wright
Monica Ashante Wright (born July 15, 1988) is an American basketball coach and former player. She played college basketball for Virginia and was selected second overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2010 WNBA draft. Outside of the WNBA, she played professionally in Poland, Turkey, Australia, South Korea and Iceland. She is currently the assistant general manager for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA. Early life and high school career Wright was born to Garry and Lynette Wright in San Antonio, Texas. She has an older brother named Gerard. Her family later moved to Woodbridge, Virginia where she attended Forest Park High School. At Forest Park, she averaged 22.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 4.0 steals per game. The USC Trojans women's basketball team, or the Women of Troy, is the collegiate women's basketball team that represents the University of Southern California, in the Pac-12 Conference. Kadi Sissoko
Kadi Sissoko (born January 25, 1999) is a French professional basketball player who plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA. She was selected in the Third Round of the 2023 WNBA draft by the Mercury. She played college basketball at Syracuse, Minnesota, and USC. College career Sissoko committed to play for Syracuse in 2018. 2023 Indiana Fever Season
The 2023 Indiana Fever season was the franchise's 24th season in the Women's National Basketball Association, and their first season under new head coach Christie Sides. The Fever named Sides their new head coach on November 4, 2022. She previously spent two seasons in Indiana as an assistant coach from 2018 to 2019. The Fever won the 2023 WNBA Draft Lottery and were awarded the first overall pick for the first time in franchise history. The Fever started the season slowly going 1–3 in May, with their one win coming against Atlanta. The Fever showed improvement in June, finishing the season 4–7. However, they won four of six games in the middle of the month and took Chicago to overtime.
