2023 North American Indigenous Games
The 2023 North American Indigenous Games are being held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 16 to 23, featuring 5000 athletes from 756 Indigenous nations competing in 16 sports across 21 venues, who will also share and celebrate their cultures. Bidding process Halifax, also known for the games by its Mi’kmaq name, K'jipuktuk, won the initial 2020 North American Indigenous Games bidding process in 2018. This made it the first city in Atlantic Canada to host the games. They were postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, then rescheduled for 2023. Funding The Government of Canada provided $8.363 million in funding through various departmental streams. The Government of Nova Scotia announced a $3.5 million package when Halifax won the bid in 2018. Halifax Common
The Halifax Common, in local popular usage often referred to as the Commons, is a Canadian urban park in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is Canada’s oldest urban park. History The Halifax Common was originally a lightly forested swampy area which formed the source of Freshwater Brook, which flowed into Halifax Harbour near the site of today's Pier 21. The Common was designated by surveyors following the settling of Halifax in 1749. It was created to serve three purposes. The first was to provide pasturage for horses and livestock, both by the military garrison and the citizens of Halifax. Timberlea, Nova Scotia
Timberlea is a community located within the Municipality of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. History The community was first known as Nine Mile River after the river in the centre of the community which fed several early mills. In the mid-19th century, the St. Margaret's Bay Road was routed through the community. Several hotels were established to cater to travelers and later sportspeople and the Nine Mile River was crossed by an arched stone bridge, which survived until 2014 as one of the only surviving stone bridges in Nova Scotia. After the arrival of the Halifax and Southwestern Railway in 1904, the community was referred to as Bowser's Station; after Angus Bowser. Lake Banook
Lake Banook is a freshwater lake located in Dartmouth within the Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is home to three sprint canoe and kayak clubs, two rowing clubs, and a dragon boat club. It also has a claim to be the birthplace of ice hockey.
