2023 New York Yankees Season
The 2023 New York Yankees season is the 121st season for the New York Yankees franchise. The Yankees began the season on March 30 against the San Francisco Giants at home and will end the season on the road against the Kansas City Royals. After the Yankees re-signed general manager Brian Cashman in December 2022, the team announced Brian Sabean as executive adviser to Cashman on January 2, 2023. Sabean spent 30 seasons with the San Francisco Giants (four as executive vice president), leading the organization to three World Series rings in the 2010s. He previously spent eight seasons with the Yankees, first joining as a scout in 1985. American League East
The American League East is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. MLB consists of an East, Central, and West division for each of its two 15-team leagues, the American League (AL) and National League (NL). This division was created before the start of the season along with the American League West division. Before that time, each league consisted of 10 teams without any divisions. Four of the division's five teams are located in the Eastern United States, with the other team, the Toronto Blue Jays, in Eastern Canada. The New York Yankees are an American professional baseball team based in the New York City borough of the Bronx. Isiah Kiner-Falefa
Isiah Kiner-Falefa (born March 23, 1995), often abbreviated as IKF, is an American professional baseball shortstop for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB for the Texas Rangers from 2018 to 2021. Kiner-Falefa was born in raised in Hawaii where he attended Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu. Out of high school, he was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. After spending five seasons in the Rangers farm system, Kiner-Falefa made his major league debut in April 2018. In 2020, he won the American League Gold Glove Award at third base. Anthony Vincent Rizzo (born August 8, 1989) is an American professional baseball first baseman for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). Infield is a sports term whose definition depends on the sport in whose context it is used. An infielder is a baseball player stationed at one of four defensive "infield" positions on the baseball field. Standard arrangement of positions In a game of baseball, two teams of nine players take turns playing offensive and defensive roles. Although there are many rules to baseball, in general the team playing offense tries to score runs by batting balls into the field that enable runners to make a complete circuit of the four bases. In baseball and softball, while there are nine named fielding positions, players, with the exception of the pitcher and catcher, may move around freely. In baseball statistics, a player is credited with a plate appearance (denoted by PA) each time he completes a turn batting. Under Rule 5.04(c) of the Official Baseball Rules, a player completes a turn batting when he is put out or becomes a runner. Pickoff
In baseball, a pickoff is an act by a pitcher or catcher, throwing a live ball to a fielder so that the fielder can tag out a baserunner who is either leading off or about to begin stealing the next base. A pickoff attempt occurs when this throw is made in an attempt to make such an out or, more commonly, to "keep the runner close" by making it clear that the pitcher is aware and concerned with the runner's actions. A catcher may also attempt to throw runners out who likewise "stray too far" from their bases after a pitch; this can also be called a pickoff attempt. Pitch Clock
A pitch clock is used in college baseball and Minor League Baseball to limit the amount of time a pitcher uses before he throws the ball to the hitter. This is one measure that has accelerated the pace of play. Major League Baseball (MLB) will begin using a pitch clock in the season. Examples In college baseball, the Southeastern Conference experimented with using pitch clocks in 2010. Pitchers were given twenty seconds to throw the pitch, or a ball would be added to the count. Similarly, a batter stepping out of the batter's box with less than five seconds on the clock will be assessed an additional strike.
