2023 New York City Council Election
The 2023 New York City Council elections were held on November 7, 2023, with primaries having occurred on June 27, 2023. Due to redistricting and the 2020 changes to the New York City Charter, councilmembers elected during the 2021 and 2023 City Council elections will serve two-year terms, with full four-year terms resuming after the 2025 New York City Council elections. Party nominees were chosen using ranked-choice voting. Two incumbents lost re-election; Democrat Marjorie Velazquez lost to Republican Kristy Marmorato, while Republican Ari Kagan, who was elected as a Democrat in 2021 but switched parties in 2022, lost to a fellow incumbent, Democrat Justin Brannan. Brannan and Kagan had been placed in the same district, creating a new district with no incumbent which was won by Democrat Susan Zhuang. New York City Council
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five Borough (New York City), boroughs. The council serves as a check against the Mayor of New York City, mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Members elected in or after 2010 are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year respite; however, members elected before 2010 may seek third successive terms. The head of the city council is called the speaker (politics), speaker. The current speaker is Adrienne Adams (politician), Adrienne Adams, a Democrat from the 28th district in Queens. New York City's 47th City Council District
New York City's 47th City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It has been represented by Republican Ari Kagan since 2022; Kagan succeeded Mark Treyger, who could not run again in 2021 due to term limits. Geography District 47 is based around Coney Island and other parts of Brooklyn's southern shoreline, including Gravesend, Sea Gate, eastern Bensonhurst, and a small section of Bath Beach. Most of Coney Island's attractions, such as the Wonder Wheel, the New York Aquarium, and the Riegelmann Boardwalk, are located within the district. The district overlaps with Brooklyn Community Boards 11, 13, and 15, and with New York's 8th, 10th, and 11th congressional districts.
