2023 Belgrade City Assembly Election
Local elections were held in Belgrade on 17 December 2023 to elect members of the City Assembly of Belgrade, City Assembly. Initially scheduled to be held by 2026, the election was called earlier after Aleksandar Vučić, the president of Serbia, announced in September 2023 that the election could be held in December 2023. In response to the announcement, Aleksandar Šapić, the mayor of Belgrade, tendered his resignation. Šapić ceased being mayor on 30 October 2023, when the Temporary Council of Belgrade was established. 2022 Belgrade City Assembly Election
Local elections were held in Belgrade on 3 April 2022 to elect members of the City Assembly. Alongside the election, national-level general elections and local elections in 12 other towns and municipalities were held on the same day. The elections are likely to be repeated in either December 2022 or March 2023, considering the government coalition has a tight majority, receiving less votes than the opposition parties. Branimir Nestorović
Branimir Nestorović ( sr-cyrl, Бранимир Несторовић; born 16 December 1954) is a Serbian politician, pulmonologist, conspiracy theorist, and retired university professor serving as the member of the National Assembly since 6 February 2024. He is one of the representatives of the We–The Voice from the People organisation and was elected to the National Assembly and the Belgrade City Assembly in 2023. In his career, he was also a paediatrician, allergist, and a professor emeritus of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade. National Democratic Alternative (Serbia)
The National Democratic Alternative (, NADA) is a national-conservative political coalition in Serbia, led by the New Democratic Party of Serbia (NDSS) and Movement for the Restoration of the Kingdom of Serbia (POKS). Electoral Fraud
Electoral fraud, sometimes referred to as election manipulation, voter fraud or vote rigging, involves illegal interference with the process of an election, either by increasing the vote share of a favored candidate, depressing the vote share of rival candidates, or both. Serbia Against Violence (coalition)
Serbia Against Violence ( sr-Cyrl, Србија против насиља, Srbija protiv nasilja, abbr. SPN) is an opposition coalition of political parties in Serbia. Formalised in October 2023, SPN took part in the parliamentary, Vojvodina provincial, Belgrade City Assembly elections and elections for city assemblies in other cities, all of which were held on 17 December 2023. The SPN was formed out of the Serbia Against Violence protests that began after the Belgrade elementary school and Mladenovac and Smederevo mass shootings in May 2023. 2023 Serbian Protests
In May 2023, a series of mass protests began in Belgrade and other locations in Serbia, following Belgrade school shooting, a school shooting in Belgrade and Mladenovac and Smederevo shootings, a spree shooting near Mladenovac and Smederevo. The protests, named Serbia Against Violence ( sr-cyr, Србија против насиља, Srbija protiv nasilja), had been attended by tens of thousands of demonstrators on every protest since 8 May. Mladenovac And Smederevo Shootings
On the evening of 4 May 2023, a shooting spree occurred in the villages of Dubona near Mladenovac, and Malo Orašje near Smederevo, Serbia. Armed with an automatic assault rifle, the shooter opened fire from a car, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including an off-duty police officer, and leaving twelve others injured. The suspect, 20-year-old Uroš Blažić, fled the scene but was apprehended the next day near Kragujevac. Following the incident, Blažić's father, uncle, and first cousin were also taken into custody, facing charges related to criminal possession of a weapon. Uncle and first cousin were tried separately from the rest. First cousin was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months in prison, while uncle was acquitted. Belgrade School Shooting
On 3 May 2023, a school shooting occurred at Vladislav Ribnikar Model Elementary School in the Vračar municipality of Belgrade, Serbia. The shooter, identified as a 13-year-old male student, mass shooting, opened fire on students and staff, resulting in the deaths of ten individuals, including nine students and a security guard. Six others, five students and a teacher, also sustained injuries. The shooter surrendered willingly and was taken into custody. However, due to his age being below 14, which falls below Serbia's age of criminal responsibility, the shooter could not face legal charges.
