The 2023 AFL season is the 127th season of the Australian Football League (AFL), the highest level senior men's Australian rules football competition in Australia, which was known as the Victorian Football League until 1989. The season will feature eighteen clubs and is scheduled to run from 16 March until 30 September, comprising a 23-game home-and-away season, the longest in league history, followed by a finals series featuring the top eight clubs. Background The fixture was extended to 23 matches per club, the longest in history. This was to accommodate the introduction of the 'Gather Round' – known in full as 'Gather Round... a festival of footy' – a special round featuring all eighteen clubs playing in the same city; this was modelled on the Magic Round, which the National Rugby League had scheduled annually since 2019. Jordan Dawson (born 9 April 1997) is a professional Australian rules footballer who is captain of the Adelaide Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Jack Gunston (born 16 October 1991) is a professional Australian footballer who plays for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life Gunston was raised in Melbourne in Beaumaris and attended Haileybury College, playing school football alongside three other future AFL players ( Tom Scully, Jack Hutchins, and Tom Lynch). Jarrod Berry (born 5 February 1998) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by Brisbane with their second selection and seventeenth overall in the 2016 national draft. Lachlan Oliver Neale (born 24 May 1993) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). Harris Michael Johnston Andrews (born 11 December 1996) is an Australian rules footballer and the co-captain of the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). Christian Fagan (born 23 June 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who is the senior coach of the Brisbane Lions in the Australian Football League (AFL). He spent his entire playing career in Tasmania, playing 263 senior games with Hobart, Sandy Bay, and Devonport.
