The 2022–23 Pittsburgh Penguins season was the 56th season for the National Hockey League team that was established on June 5, 1967. During the season Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang each played in their 1,000th NHL game, joining Sidney Crosby as the only players in franchise history to accomplish this feat while playing all 1,000 games for the Penguins. They were eliminated from playoff contention on April 12, 2023 after the New York Islanders defeated the Montreal Canadiens, missing the postseason for the first time since 2006, and ending the longest active playoff appearance streak among the four major North American sports leagues at 16 years. Metropolitan Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division (often referred to simply as the "Metro Division") was formed in 2013 as one of the two divisions in the Eastern Conference as part of a league realignment. It is also a successor of the original Atlantic Division and one of the two successors to the Southeast Division. Six of its teams were previously together in the Patrick Division from 1981 to 1993 (one joined in 1982). 2022–23 New York Islanders Season
The 2022–23 New York Islanders season was the 51st season in the franchise's history. It was their second season in UBS Arena. Lane Lambert was promoted to head coach on May 16, 2022, after Barry Trotz was fired at the end of the 2021–22 season. The Islanders clinched a playoff berth on April 12, 2023, after defeating the Montreal Canadiens. The Islanders lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in the First Round in six games. KeyBank Center is a multipurpose indoor arena located in Buffalo, New York. Originally known as Marine Midland Arena, the venue has since been named HSBC Arena and First Niagara Center. Nationwide Arena is a multi-purpose arena in Columbus, Ohio, United States. Since completion in 2000, the arena has served as the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL).
