2022–23 Iraqi Premier League
The 2022–23 Iraqi Premier League is the 49th season of the Iraqi Premier League, the highest tier football league in Iraq, since its establishment in 1974. The season started on 9 October 2022 and will end in July 2023. Al-Hudood, Karbalaa and Duhok joined as the promoted clubs from the 2021–22 Iraq Division One, replacing Amanat Baghdad, Al-Minaa and Samarra who were relegated. Iraqi Premier League
The Iraqi Premier League ( ar, الدوري العراقي الممتاز) is the top level of the Iraqi football league system. Contested by 20 clubs, it is operated by the Iraq Football Association (IFA) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Iraq Division One. The league was formed by the IFA in 1974 as the Iraqi National Clubs First Division, the first nationwide league of clubs in Iraq. The current format sees 20 teams playing 38 matches each (playing each team in the league twice, home and away), totalling 380 matches in the season. Of the 80 teams to have competed since the inception of the league in 1974, eleven have won the title. Al-Zawraa are the most successful club with 14 titles, followed by Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya, Al-Talaba and Al-Shorta, who together contest the Baghdad derbies. Naft Al-Wasat Sports Club ( ar, نادي نفط الوسط الرياضي, lit=''Midland Oil'') is an Iraqi sports club based in Najaf, Iraq. Its professional football team plays in the Iraqi Premier League, the top tier of Iraqi football. The club's home stadium is An-Najaf Stadium. Founded in 2008, Naft Al-Wasat spent three seasons in the Iraq Division Two and another three in the Iraq Division One until they were promoted from the 2013–14 Iraq Division One to the Iraqi Premier League. Al-Zawraa SC
Al-Zawraa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الزوراء الرياضي) is an Iraqi sports club based in Utayfia, Karkh District (near Tigris River), Baghdad. Their football team compete in the Iraqi Premier League, the top-flight of Iraqi football. Al-Zawraa are the most decorated club in Iraq having won 14 Premier League titles, 16 Iraq FA Cups and 5 Iraqi Super Cups, all national records. Al-Zawraa also won the Iraqi Elite Cup a joint-record 3 times. Al-Talaba Sports Club ( ar, نادي الطلبة الرياضي, lit=''Students Sports Club'') is an Iraqi sports club based in Al-Rusafa, Baghdad. Its football team competes in the Iraqi Premier League, the top flight of Iraqi football. Founded in 1977, it was merged with another club called Al-Jamiea ahead of the 1978–79 season. Their home stadium is Al-Talaba Stadium. Al-Talaba are one of Iraq's most successful teams having won five league titles, with the most recent being in the 2001–02 season. It has teams in 17 different sports, more than any other Iraqi club, and the best known section of the club is the football team, whose origins date back to 1932. Their football team plays in the highest division in Iraq which is the Iraqi Premier League, which they have never been relegated from. Al-Karkh Sports Club ( ar, نادي الكرخ الرياضي) is an Iraqi sports club based in Karkh, Baghdad. Its professional football team plays in the Iraqi Premier League, the top tier of the Iraqi football. Al-Kahrabaa Sports Club ( ar, نادي الكهرباء الرياضي, lit=Electricity Club) is an Iraqi professional football club based in the Rusafa District, near the Tigris river, Baghdad, that plays in Iraqi Premier League. Zakho Sport Club, also spelled as Zaxo Sport Club ( ku-2, یانا زاخو یا وه‌رزشی / ''Yana Zaxo ya Werzişî'') is a sports club based in Zakho, Iraqi Kurdistan.
