2022 In Poetry
Major poetry related events taking place worldwide during 2022 are outlined below under different sections. These include poetry books released during the year in different languages, major poetry awards, poetry festivals and events, besides anniversaries and deaths of renowned poets etc. Nationality words link to articles with information on the nation's poetry or literature (for instance, India or France). Events * April 30 – Sierra Poetry festival was organised in Nevada City, California. The theme for this year was "On the Wings of Words". * June 10 – A three-day international get together of poets and poetry translators titled ''Kolkata Poetry Confluence'' was organised at Kolkata, India by Antonym and Bhasha Sansad publishers. * June 12 – Queensland Poetry Festival kicked off with this year's theme "Emerge" with live performances by Lorna Munro and Ethan Enoch-Barlow. Indian Poetry
Indian poetry and Indian literature in general, has a long history dating back to Vedic times. They were written in various Indian languages such as Vedic Sanskrit, Classical Sanskrit, Tamil, Odia, Maithili, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Assamese, Urdu, and Hindi. Poetry in foreign languages such as English also has a strong influence on Indian poetry. The poetry reflects diverse spiritual traditions within India. In particular, many Indian poets have been inspired by mystical experiences. Poetry is the oldest form of literature and has a rich written and oral tradition. Indian poetry awards There are very few literary awards in India for poetry alone. The prestigious awards like Jnanapeeth, Sahitya Akademi and Kalidas Samman etc. are given away to writers of both prose and poetry. Most of the awards have gone to novelists. Amanda Gorman
Amanda S. C. Gorman (born March 7, 1998) is an American poet and Civil rights activist, activist. Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, Race and ethnicity in the United States, race, and Social exclusion, marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. Gorman was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. She published the poetry book ''The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough'' in 2015. In 2021, she delivered her poem "The Hill We Climb" at the inauguration of Joe Biden, inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden. Her inauguration poem generated international acclaim, and shortly thereafter, two of her books achieved best-seller status, and she obtained a professional management contract. Markus Hediger
Markus Hediger (born 31 March 1959) is a Swiss writer and translator. Life Markus Hediger was born in Zürich and brought up in Reinach, Aargau. From 1980 to 1990 he studied French literature, literary criticism and Italian literature at University of Zurich. At the age of 16 he went to Paris for the first time. In 1979 he met there the Lebanese poet and playwright Georges Schehadé who opened to him new poetical horizons and whom he visited regularly until his death in 1989. In Switzerland he became friends with the writers Erika Burkart, Hugo Loetscher, Alice Rivaz and Walter Vogt (writer), Walter Vogt. In 1996 Markus Hediger published his first book of poetry, ''Ne retournez pas la pierre''. This was followed by ''En deçà de la lumière'' in 2009 and ''Dans le cendrier du temps'' in 2022. Abdellatif Laâbi
Abdellatif Laâbi is a Moroccan poet, journalist, novelist, playwright, translator and political activist, born in 1942 in Fes, Morocco. Laâbi, then teaching French, founded with other poets the artistic journal Souffles, an important literary review in 1966. It was considered as a meeting point of some poets who felt the emergency of a poetic stand and revival, but which, very quickly, crystallized all Moroccan creative energies: painters, film-makers, men of theatre, researchers and thinkers. It was banned in 1972, but throughout its short life, it opened up to cultures from other countries of the Maghreb and those of the Third World. Abdellatif Laâbi was imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to ten years in prison for "crimes of opinion" (for his political beliefs and his writings) and served a sentence from 1972–1980. Harold Schechter
Harold Schechter (born June 28, 1948) is an American true crime writer who specializes in serial killers. He is a Professor Emeritus at Queens College, City University of New York where he taught classes in American literature and myth criticism for forty-two years. Schechter's essays have appeared in numerous publications including ''The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times'', and the ''International Herald Tribune''. He is the editor of the Library of America volume, ''True Crime: An American Anthology''. His newest book, published in March 2021, is ''Maniac: The Bath School Disaster and the Birth of the Modern Mass Killer''. Education Schechter attended the State University of New York at Buffalo where his PhD director was Leslie Fiedler. He is also a 1969 graduate of City College of New York. Kimiko Hahn
Kimiko Hahn (born July 5, 1955) is an American poet and distinguished professor in the MFA program of Queens College, CUNY. Her works frequently deal with the reinvention of poetic forms and the intersecting of conflicting identities. Biography Hahn was born in Mount Kisco, New York on July 5, 1955. Her parents are both artists. Her mother, Maude Miyako Hamai, was a Japanese American from Maui, Hawaii; her father, Walter Hahn, was a German American from Wisconsin. They met in Chicago, where Walter was a friend of the notable African American author Ralph Ellison. Her sister is Tomie Hahn, a performer and ethnologist. Hahn grew up in Pleasantville, New York, and between 1964 and 1965, the Hahns later lived in Tokyo, Japan. As a teen, she became involved in the New York City Asian American movement of the 1970s. Ocean Vuong
Ocean Vuong (born , ; October 14, 1988) is a Vietnamese American poet, essayist, and novelist. Vuong is a recipient of the 2014 Ruth Lilly/Sargent Rosenberg fellowship from the Poetry Foundation, a 2016 Whiting Award, and the 2017 T.S. Eliot Prize for his poetry. His debut novel, ''On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous'', was published in 2019. He received a MacArthur Grant the same year. Early life Vuong was born in Hồ Chí Minh City, Vietnam. Solmaz Sharif
Solmaz Sharif ( fa, سولماز شریف; born 1983) is an Iranian-American poet. Her debut poetry collection, ''Look'', was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award. She is currently an Assistant Professor of English at Arizona State University. Early life and education Sharif was born in Istanbul, Turkey as her parents were in the process of immigrating from Iran to the United States; her parents had studied in the US during the 1970s but had returned to Iran during the Iranian Revolution. Newborn Sharif and her family settled first in Texas, where her father finished his studies; the family moved again a few years later to Birmingham, Alabama, where her mother finished her bachelor's degree. Roger Reeves
Roger William Reeves (born January 1980) is an American poet and essayist. Life Early life and education Reeves was born and raised in southern New Jersey. Jos Charles
Jos Charles (born November 14, 1988) is a trans American poet, writer, translator, and editor. In 2017 her book ''feeld'' was a winner in the prestigious National Poetry Series. She is the founding editor of THEM, the first trans literary journal in the United States. Biography Charles grew up in a conservative Evangelical Christian family, and wrote her first poem, about the Crucifixion, when she was seven years old.
