2022 Wimbledon Championships
The 2022 Wimbledon Championships was a Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam tier tennis tournament that took place at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. Novak Djokovic successfully defended his gentlemen's singles title to claim his 21st Grand Slam (tennis)#Tournaments, major title, defeating Nick Kyrgios in the final. Ashleigh Barty was the reigning ladies' champion, but did not defend her title after retiring from professional tennis in March 2022. The ladies' singles title was won by Elena Rybakina, who defeated Ons Jabeur in the final. This year, the AELTC #Controversy regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian players, barred Russian and Belarusian tennis players from competing, because of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. In reaction, the Women's Tennis Association, WTA, Association of Tennis Professionals, ATP, and International Tennis Federation, ITF withdrew ranking points from the tournament. Diede de Groot (born 19 December 1996) is a Dutch wheelchair tennis player who is the current world No. 1 in both singles and doubles. De Groot is a 31-time major champion, having won 16 titles in singles, and 15 titles in doubles. In 2021, she achieved the first calendar-year Super Slam in tennis history by winning all four singles major titles, the Paralympic gold medal, and the Wheelchair Tennis Masters title in women's singles. Angella Okutoyi
Angella Okutoyi (born 29 January 2004) is a Kenyan professional tennis player. She became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title at the girls’ juniors Wimbledon event partnering Rose Marie Nijkamp. At the 2022 Australian Open, Okutoyi became the first representative of Kenya to win a girls’ junior singles Grand Slam match. On the ITF Circuit, she has won one doubles title.
