2022 Nauruan Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 24 September 2022 to elect all 19 members of parliament. All candidates were elected on a non-partisan basis. Following the election, Russ Kun, a member of parliament for Ubenide, was elected president by parliament. Background In the 2019 elections, nearly half of the Parliament members lost their seats, including incumbent President Baron Waqa. Justice minister David Adeang, Waqa's deputy, retained his seat. Adeang was a candidate in the following presidential election; he lost to Lionel Aingimea, who had been an assistant minister. The Aingimea government implemented some electoral changes. Potential candidates in regularly scheduled general elections were now required to register their intention 270 days before the end of the parliamentary term. Delvin Oneil Thoma (born 8 February 1983) is a Nauruan politician. Career In the 2019 Nauruan parliamentary election, Thoma unsuccessfully ran for the Aiwo Constituency. Out of eight candidates, Thoma came in fourth. In the 2022 parliamentary election, Thoma was successfully elected to the Parliament of Nauru, alongside Rennier Gadabu, who won re-election. Thoma unseated Milton Dube. On 29 September, Thoma was appointed to President Russ Kun's cabinet, as Deputy Minister for the Republic of Nauru Phosphate Corporation (RONPHOS). The COVID-19 pandemic in Nauru is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was confirmed to have reached Nauru on 2 April 2022. Background By March 2020, the government declared a national emergency as a preventive measure, suspending all but one weekly flight to the country and instituting a 14-day quarantine for all arrivals. Marcus Ajemada Stephen (born 1 October 1969) is a Nauruan politician and former sportsperson who previously was a member of the Cabinet of Nauru, and who served as President of Nauru from December 2007 to November 2011. The son of Nauruan parliamentarian Lawrence Stephen, Stephen was educated at St Bedes College and RMIT University in Victoria, Australia. Initially playing Australian rules football, he opted to pursue the sport of weightlifting, in which he represented Nauru at the Summer Olympics and Commonwealth Games between 1990 and 2002, winning seven Commonwealth gold medals.
